http://www.city-data.com/forum/raleigh-durham-chapel-hill-cary/266135-you-know-you-raleigh-if.html

makes me wish I was born and raised in Raleigh. i can't wait til they open the North Hills time capsule in 2017. i didn't know that there was a Keebler plant across from Costco (which used to be a Pepsi plant) and beside the Keebler plant was a KMart (where the Staples is now). There used to be a Fast Fare on campus on Hillsborough Street. The Harris Teeter at Cameron Village used to be a Sears. Crabtree Mall, when it opened, was the largest mall between D.C. and Atlanta. Zeppelin and Kiss played Dorton Arena.

where was Barry's II on Hillsborough St? Was it where Pi Bar (or whatever it is now) is?

Are you sure it didn't used to be a Thalhimers? My grandmother used to work there. My grandparents have lived in Raleigh for 50+ years. My dad used to tell us stories about playing on the beltline as they were building it.

Food Lion on Western used to be a BEST products.
The empty lot above Crabtree used to be a Brendles (sp?). Not sure what happened between Brendles and destruction.
Beansprout Chinese was a Snoopy's once-upon-a-time.
Another Snoopy's on Capital Blvd is now a used car dealership.
Ten Ten Chinese used to be a Golden Corral.
Darryl's and Swenson's were awesome.
The blue O in Cameron Village (don't think it's been gone that long).
Wasn't the Walmart on Glenwood a K-mart (that was destroyed by the great Raleigh tornado)?

I need to ponder some more.

Raleigh Native.

Born at Wake Med.

I remember when there was a Big Star in that Townridge shopping center on Creedmoore and Six Forks.

I remember Dillard's Store on leesville Road.

Hell, during the big snow storm in 1996 through I rode my horse up to the Food Lion at Pinecrest.

There used to be a wooden railing on the balcony at Crabtree...

Hmm....OH there used to be a PICADILLY at crabtree when I was really little...we would go eat dinner there.

There was also this dope ass breakfast spot my dad always took me to where the Days Inn is now on Glenwood.

There was a K-Mart on Glenwood where Walmart is now, but it got leveled by a tornado in 1988 (I think?)

The local stories get even better when my dad tells me about how they would get from The Office Tavern, where Lilly's is now at five points, all the way out to Durham, on their motorcycles, in less than 10 minutes.

Then again, my family is from Wake County all the way back to the 1700s.

I remember the wooden railing and Piccadilly at Crabtree. I liked Su Casa there as well.
There used to be a Polynesian restaurant at Cary Village Mall. The center food court in the mall was sunken.

my younger brother and sister were born at Rex Hospital, back when it was on Wade Avenue where the unemployment office is. i would have been born there, too, except my dad was in the military overseas at that time, and my mom was with him for a year.

i remember going to Crabtree Mall when i was about 4. it was a tiny thing then. Sears had some video games inside i would try to play while my mom shopped.

As that strip mall started to decline there was an awesome Indian market in there and the library would use the empty Brendle's to do their annual book sale.

Crabtree bought up the land and was originally going to build a sort of expansion in that area. They also bought the land the Pizza Hut was on and tore that down. But then they started having financial troubles and those plans got halted. I believe they ended up selling the land to another developer.

hahahaha, oh man, trolling before there were internet forums to troll. Love it
Quote :
"Does anybody remember the Gene Jenkins "mayor for raleigh" (I think) radio campaign? Maybe around 1988?

The radio ads featured this guy names Jene Genkins. He always started out by saying something like "thats Jene with a J and Genkins with a G."

Just the opposite of what you would think.

Anyway, his radio spots were all over the local airways.

I can't remember the details, but I think he was running for Raleigh Mayor or something... only using radio b/c it was cheaper than tv advertising.

Every few days a new ad would start - and while his campaign promises initially made sense - they started getting more bizzare by the week.

He wanted to do things like increase revenue by mandating taxes on pets - "not so much for goldfish.. maybe more for a cat".

Minimum library rules - everybody had to check out 3 books a month to increase literacy.

There are many more I can't remember. Maybe somebody can help.

His campaign ideas were so bizzare - yet they always had a pinch of "maybe that would work" ideology.

Before long everybody was talking about Jene Genkins. Who was this mystery man never seen in person but heard on the radio?

Could he really put a tax on pets?? Make sure we all read 3 books a month?? Who was this guy???

The buzz increased. People were talking about Jene Genkins around the water cooler, at grocery stores, neighborhood pools, etc. Remember, this is pre internet - instant communication etc.

It was big time.

Raleigh couldn't stop talking about Jean Genkins...........................................

It got to the point people couldn't wait to hear the next Jene Genkins "campaign promise."

It finally ended with the final "campaign ad" - it was revealed there wasn't a Jene Genkins - It was a fictional charactor. The whole thing was an advertising blitz to show/prove the power of radio advertising.. and it worked..

For the next few weeks, all this town could talk about was how we'd all been tricked, etc.

To this day, I can't believe we were all duped by a campaign ad. I laugh to myself just remembering the hype...

It was so realistic and believable in its own way.

You have to have been living here to really appreciate the impact "Jene Genkins" had on the community and Raleigh Radio in general.

Anybody else remember???????

There was one on Hillsborough, Glenwood, and Old Wake Forest (maybe Falls of the Neuse). The one on Hillsborough had the jail cells, the one on Old Wake Forest had a ferris wheel car.

The Crown gas at Capital and Brentwood used to have a water fountain. It's a filled in planter now.

The hotel next door used to be a Holiday Inn.

North of the US1/401 split used to be called Mini City.

There was a radical dirt track behind the strip mall between Maynard and Walnut (across from Cary Swim Club and Galaxy, with TJ Maxx in it). They covered it with a giant pile of dirt when they built the extension onto the strip mall.

Fish Pros used to be across from the fairgrounds, next to Burke Brothers.

The Southern rail car that was near Burke Brothers/Fish Pros/woodyard has been there for at least 25-30 years. I think it may finally be gone--I'll have to look.

I remember the builders of Crossroads claiming the same thing. Then they failed to secure funding and it turned into a giant strip mall.

There was one guy who refused to sell when they were buying land for Crossroads. They cleared everything around him until he was left living in a small forested island in the middle of a giant field of barren red clay.

The K-Mart was in the TownRidge shopping center, across from the former Phar-Mor space (now Bed Bath and Beyond). The K-Mart then became a Best Buy and now its a golf store.

And Sears at Crabree had a pet store.

My school bus in elementary school went by that intersection every day. I remember watching them BUILD the keebler plant and imagining how they were going to fit in that big ass tree the elves lived in (yes i had an overactive imagination.) I remember them tearing it down a decade later and building the newer shopping area there.

We used to go to that Kmart all the time... after hurricane fran that entire area was flooded and I walked down there and people were in canoes and shit trying to get across. That's why they trucked in tons and tons of fill material and created a mound to build the new shopping center on after they tore down the k-mart so the flooding wouldn't be an issue again. (and that mcdonalds has always been there and i guess ronald mcdonald had a hydrology background since they built that shit high up in the first place.)

Shoneys was the shit. the one I remember was off Capital and Huntleigh

Dunderbacks Old World Market at Crabtree was awesome.

The Ice Caps at Dorton definitely bring me back.

I still call "Adventure Landing" Putt-Putt.

Anyone remember "the Showgram" with Bob and Mike?...later Bob and Madison... on G105

haha Steve Swinkowski the weathergod

The Mars Music on Huntleigh and Capital used to be a HQ (home quarters) but then they all went under in like 1992

Old Bulls Stadium where the bull would light up and blow smoke after a home run...

Discovery Zone!!!

Ultrazone!!

the K&W type thing called "The Capitol Room" that was IN Belk's at Crabtree

Fayetteville st. was

Legend has it that Cameron village houses a complete underground complex that was soley filled with bars during my parents' college days. wish we still had that....

Skate Ranch!! (still exists, but extremely ghetto now)
