^^ you realize they average over 2 goals a game scored in the WC right? The lowest average of goals per game ever at a completed WC is something like 2.25.

nah. It may have the lowest first round on record for sure, but that is why I stated "completed" world cups. 1990 had the lowest at 2.21 goals/game. I understand it was a low scoring first round of games this year, but after adding just 2 games in the 2nd round of group play, the number of goals per game is sitting at 2.1

yea. I mean statistically this first round was definitely an outlier as far as goals scored for sure, and it very well may end up being the lowest goals scored in a WC, but the average is still over 2 goals / game at this point. One of the things that definitely is playing a factor this year is that the groups are much, much more competitive than in years past. Some previous years that were pushing 3 goals/game in the early rounds had the added help of some mismatched group games resulting in more 4-0, 6-0, 6-1 etc. final scores This year it has made for tighter 1st round games, and more cautious playing in everybody's first game it seems like.
