I thought they couldn't hear you unless you held down some buttons or something

Step 1: Obtain Xbox 360
Step 2: Obtain Xbox 360 controller
Step 3: Turn on Xbox 360 system and controller
Step 4: Ensure controller is "synced" to the system
Step 5: Load game disk into tray
Step 6: Start gameplay
Step 7: Obtain Xbox 360 headset
Step 8: Ensure headset is properly plugged into the bottom of the controller that is currently in use
Step 9: Ensure headset is in the "on"/"talk" position rather than the "off"/"mute" position
Step 9-A: (the location of this switch depends upon the brand of headset... if using a Microsoft Xbox 360 headset, the switch will be midway up the cord, and the on position is marked by a visible green area on the switch)
Step 10: Ensure headset volume is turned up
Step 11: Place headset on head, with the microphone near mouth level
Step 12-Final: Begin speaking into headset

For realz, tho: Certain games have settings where you may need to push-to-talk in certain situations, but for the most part you can speak freely at any time during gameplay and your team should hear you.

it seems like people press a button when they talk cause I don't hear them breathing or talking or anything otherwise

and I don't mean the on/off switch, cause that is too hard to do if you're in the middle of using the controller

nah, the Xbox headsets, despite being able to break/stop working very easily, are surprisingly good at filtering voice from background noise. If you hear someone breathing, it's probably because they're intentionally trying to bug everyone with breathing noises.

The only times I've ever heard an xbox mic make noise continuously is for very loud background music or because its broken.

because some of this stuff would be pretty easy to figure out if you'd surfed around TWW for a few years, including the main XBox 360 page in Entertainment which is like 100+ pages of stuff
