My aunt's boyfriend made the best strawberry sponge cake this weekend. The entire cake had 6 lbs of butter in it though ...in the cake and icing.

Went to the Farmer's Market Saturday, and one vendor had strawberries left, and that was her last day selling them.

I feel like strawberries are both overrated and overpriced. Sometimes when they are on sale they aren't overpriced I guess, but still I'd rather buy a fresh pineapple.

Commercially grown strawberries are neither sweet enough nor soft enough nor juicy enough. If you drop them from 12 inches on to a hard surface, they bounce. They also last several days in the fridge, which is not supposed to happen.

If you ever get a chance to go to Europe, buy some from a farmer who grows his/her own using natural methods and without chemicals. Here is what distinguishes such strawberries from the commercial ones:

- Blood red inside with lots of intensely colored juice
- Very sweet
- Very juicy
- Very soft, almost mushy; will not bounce
- Last for a day or max 2 in the fridge

You will never look at strawberries the same way again. Think cherries/raspberries (in terms of texture and juiciness) and you will get the picture!

^^i think plain strawberries are sweet enough. i am not a sugar/splenda adder to fruit

a lot of people are

i'm not though. not even grapefruit (which is my faaaaaav)

the ones i get from the strawberry farm here are soft and juicy and sweet. they def do not bounce if dropped! but that is from the pick your own strawberry farm. and yea - they don't last in the fridge long before they get gross.

^ yea that is what i was wondering. the ones i get from a farm here seem yummy to me. or the farmers market.

i do <3 strawberry pie though. mmmmmm. pie.

If you really think everything is better in Europe you haven't lived there long enough.

Not trying to call you out or anything, but that is just plain wrong..

OK, not everything.

But when it comes to [good] food, Europe is far ahead of NA. Whether it is natural foods, gourmet foods, fine foods, traditional foods, desserts, fresh produce, whatever, Europe is better. (except junk food)

I never expected to eat strawberries at the DMV, but when I was at there a few weeks ago renewing my license, the lady at the desk offered me some from a big basket she had just picked up from the Farmer's Market.
