Quote :
"PESHAWAR, Pakistan — An American armed with a pistol and a 40-inch sword was detained in northern Pakistan and told investigators he was on a solo mission to kill Usama bin Laden, a police officer said Tuesday.

The man was identified as 52-year-old Californian construction worker Gary Brooks Faulkner, said officer Mumtaz Ahmad Khan.

He was picked up in a forest in the Chitral region late on Sunday, he said.

"We initially laughed when he told us that he wanted to kill Usama bin Laden," said Khan. But he said when officers seized the pistol, the sword and night-vision equipment, "our suspicion grew."

He was questioned Tuesday by intelligence officials in Peshawar, the main northwestern city.

Faulkner told police he visited Pakistan seven times, and this was his third trip to Chitral.

Police alleged the American intended to travel to the eastern Afghan region of Nuristan, just across the border from Chitral.

The area is among several rumored hiding places for the Al Qaeda leader, who has evaded a massive U.S. effort to capture him since 2001. Bin Laden is accused of being behind the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, as well other terrorist acts.

Khan said Faulkner was also carrying a book containing Christian verses and teachings.

When asked why he thought he had a chance of tracing bin Laden, Faulkner replied, "God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him," said Khan.

Faulkner arrived in the Chitrali town of Bumburate on June 3 and stayed in a hotel there.

He was assigned a police guard, as is quite common for foreigners visiting remote parts of Pakistan. When he checked out without informing police, officers began hunting for him, said Khan.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire said the mission had received notification from Pakistani officials that an American citizen had been arrested. He said embassy officials were trying to meet the man and confirm his identity."

I bet the flight was expensive, but once you get there you probably can't spend much money if you tried.

Isn't there a massive bounty on Bin Laden?

1. Kill Bin Laden with flea market sword.
2. Collect Bounty.
3. Book deal.
4. Talk show circuit.
5. Profit!

Pretty sure this is the job that will make it so that you, your children, and your grandchildren never have to work again.

Seems like a pretty solid plan for fame and wealth to me. Too bad those Pakistani police are protecting Bin Laden.

Well fuck...if I had known there was a bounty on him I would've turn in his body after I killed him. I just dumped him out in the ocean...I didn't want to get in trouble for murdering the guy that everyone else wanted to murder.

Before sept 11, they had that dude in the crosshairs plenty of times. Won't do any good to kill him. Plenty more where he came from. It'll just make the sheep sleep a little better at night

perhaps because his family had no idea he had gone and when he turned up it was a complete shock

also, he has 9% use of his kidneys and needs dialysis, yet he decided to go halfway round the world

I saw this on the news a while ago. I don't think the guy was insane... just overly passionate.
I believe he was operating under the assumption that he, as an individual, would be successful because he can go into areas that the u.s. military cannot. Also, apparently he was fairly knowledgeable about the area... specifically certain caves gaurded by "shepherds" with walkie talkies, radios, and guns.

Passionate, but foolish.

I bet they're less than $3000 (probably a lot less). Most 52 year olds I know can come up with $21,000 if they really want to.

"Gary Faulkner was in and out of Colorado state prisons between 1981 and 1993, serving a total of about seven years in five separate stints for burglary, larceny and parole violations, state officials said.

The Larimer County sheriff released a mug shot from a 2006 arrest on charges of failing to have car insurance. "

He is a common crook.

Quote :
"Hugo Corral, who owns a barber shop in Greeley, recalled cutting Faulkner's hair a few months ago. He said Faulkner was quiet and wouldn't answer his questions. After the haircut, Corral said, he saw Faulkner acting strangely outside his shop.

"He would walk, then stop, then do something like he was saluting something. It was kind of weird," Corral said. Through the glass of his shop, he said he could hear Faulkner cursing at no one in particular."

And FUCKING INSANE.

"Faulkner underwent a medical exam Wednesday. A Pakistani doctor determined that he has psychological problems and has been undergoing dialysis every 20 days, said a senior Pakistani intelligence official, who is not identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman said Embassy personnel still have not had access to Gary Faulkner and were not aware of the doctor's examination.

Faulkner's brother, Dr. Scott Faulkner, said Tuesday that Gary Faulkner does not have mental problems.

"He doesn't meet any of the DSM -- that's the psychiatric manual -- he doesn't meet any criteria for psychosis. He is not schizophrenic. He doesn't have schizophrenia. He doesn't hear voices. God isn't telling him, 'Oh, Gary, go get him, go get him.' He's a normal person. He handles himself in society," Scott Faulkner said.

"My brother is not crazy. He is highly intelligent and loves his country and he has not forgotten what Osama has done to this country," Scott Faulkner said."

I posted that story on my facebook page and said that I thought the dude deserved a medal and this liberal hippy douche bag I went to High School with posted this in response:

Tim Osmar commented on your link:

"at the risk of offering a dissenting opinion:
if a Pakistani was caught in america and said he was on a mission to shoot general Petraeus we would call that terrorism. is this a double standard or am i just not getting the whole imperialism thing?
everyone knows Usama Bin Laden is already dead, anyways. "

Is he really comparing Petraeus to Osama?!

BTW is it Osama Usama or what?

And I have one less face book friend

I'm pretty sure his name is "Usama Bin Ladin"

although it seems he's commonly referred to as "Osama Bin Laden"
