CONTROVERSY

"Big Rock winners stripped of title

Saturday it appeared that the boat Citation had won the 52nd Big Rock Marlin Tournament for pulling in a record 883-pound blue marlin.

The tournament has announced it is withholding the prize money of more than nine hundred thousand dollars because of an apparent rules violation.

Andy Thommassen, who caught the fish, told a Jacksonville newspaper the boat did NOT have the required fishing license.

As Thommasen said, "No record, no money, no fish, no nothing.""

sucks for them

so, living in new bern, i have been following this story and this tournament. i'm not sure who is to blame here with 1.2 million dollars on the line. obviously, the first mate (who just baits and cleans the boat) should have had his $30 fishing license...but, the captain should have checked everyones license as well. OR, the captain could have obtained a blanket fishing license for the entire boat. supposedly, the boat knew about this license and tried to call in and get the license for the 22 yr old first mate at 5:01 pm, via phone. But, that would have put this kid fishing the day without the license. i'm sure there was panic on that boat, and the 22 yr old probably shit himself during the conversations on the boat looking at that fish, which was a brute. tough luck...

This kid just cost his team 1.2 million dollars in a Fishing tournament... why wouldnt he have to have a valid fishing license just like everyone else?

^^what do you mean? as in, how do the tourney people allow you to fish OR why would the capt allow you to step on the boat? i don't fish, but i'm assuming there is alot of verbal acknowledgments..."do you have your license?"..."yep, in my pocket, lets go". plus, i imagine there are a ton of boats at this event, and i doubt the tourney people will check everyone UNLESS there is 1.2 mil on the line...

yea, i was unsure of all the fishing license stuff as well, and started asking around. apparently, EVERYONE on the boat has to have a $15 in state, or $30 out of state license, unless, the captain has a blanket fishing license for his boat (apparently, alot of charter boats will do a blanket license). this kid was not the angler, just a deckhand.

^^you probably would have been fine...the nc saltwater fishing license has only been in effect since 2009.

the decision was final by the way on this boat...the boat was DQ, and the second place boat took the winnings. the kids name is all in the papers. i doubt he will be on anyones boat anytime soon.

^^^ actually you cant weigh a fish in unless it is over 400 lbs. The second place boat's fish weighed like 525 or something.
