Cody I am very impressed! Not many people know anything about Coptic. Thankfully, though, the language is not entirely dead. After the Muslims invaded Egypt some Christians continued to speak it in the Church. Today, probably the only place 99% of Egyptians will hear the language and read the text is during religious services. I do know of one priest who speaks with his family in Coptic only, but that is extremely rare.

I wish I knew Like I said, not many know how to speak it day-to-day. It is phonetic so it's very easily to learn how to read it. Most of us can read it out-loud if you give us a sheet of paper with text on it. If it's a word we haven't seen before, we can read it but we damn well do not know what it means.

I put dog biscuits in his bag on the way back from Jamaica. Drug sniffing dogs went apeshit.

The Voynich manuscript is a handwritten book thought to have been written in the 15th or 16th century and comprising about 240 vellum pages, most with illustrations. The author, script, and language remain unknown: for these reasons it has been described as "the world's most mysterious manuscript".

Generally presumed to be some kind of ciphertext, the Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. Yet it has defied all decipherment attempts, becoming an historical cryptology cause célèbre. The mystery surrounding it has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript a subject of both fanciful theories and novels: numerous possible authors have been suggested for it.

In 2009, University of Arizona researchers performed C14 dating on the manuscript's vellum, which they assert (with 95% confidence) was made between 1404 and 1438. In addition, the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago found that much of the ink was added not long afterwards, confirming that the manuscript is indeed an authentic ancient document. However, these results have yet to be published properly, leaving room for continued speculation.

The book is named after the Polish-Lithuanian-American book dealer Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912. Currently the Voynich manuscript is owned by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University, and is formally referred to as "Beinecke MS 408". The first facsimile edition was published in 2005.

from that image of the coptic language... more than half the letters are the same as greek! (they way they are written, and their names)

so does that mean a greek person could read a coptic manuscript quite well?

and looking at that Voynich manuscript, it has like 5 distinct words in it just repeated over and over. obviously someone made it 500 years ago as a prank for modern day scientists and to waste their time and money

I enjoyed the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit. Before you entered the room with the scrolls they had a Coptic scroll outside that was from Duke... I don't remember where that particular artifact was found, though.

^Good observation. All of the letters were borrowed from Greek but I think there were 7 more characters made for sounds not used in the Greek language. I couldn't point those out to you if I tried because I don't know Greek well enough to tell you which sounds belonged to the Egyptians only. A Greek person could probably read a Coptic manuscript somewhat well because it's phonetic. They'd struggle with the Coptic-only characters unless they knew what sounds they made. There are also some shared meanings in entire words, too.

alot of the ancient characters are very similar. once you get one and know your main pictograph from which it was derived it is pretty easy. Like delta is from a door symbol.
