Quote : | "'Godless' billboards popping up across North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Some billboards that are popping up in Charlotte and across North Carolina are giving some drivers reason to pause.
We found one of the billboards over the Billy Graham Parkway in west Charlotte. It shows an American flag with the words "One Nation Indivisible" superimposed.
The billboard campaign has just started and will appear in other locations across the state prior to the July 4th holiday.
The message appears seemingly harmless until one realizes the words "under God" have been purposely omitted.
The billboards will remain up for four weeks in several cities including Asheville, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.
The billboard campaign, which costs $15,000, is sponsored by the North Carolina Secular Association.
According to a statement issued by the group, most of the money used to pay for the campaign came from an organization called FreeThoughtAction whose mission is to "encourage the continuing growth, open engagement, and public acceptance of a freethought community in American society."
NCSA founder Joseph McDaniel Stewart said the campaign "is designed to bring nontheists and theists together as patriots in a shared society."
When the words 'under God' were added to the Pledge of Allegiance between 'one nation' and 'indivisible,' Stewart claims, "They made a lie out of both those ideals because you can't have an indivisible nation if you draw a line between the godly and godless. We all belong here."
Another member group of the NCSA which contributed to the billboard campaign is Charlotte Atheists & Agnostics.
William Warren, who is a member of the Charlotte group, says the billboards hits home in North Carolina.
"The North Carolina Constitution declares that one must believe in God to hold public office and even though this requirement is unenforceable because it violates the U.S. Constitution, it's still on the books," Warren said. "Think how people would react if the state constitution required that office holders be white and male."
One of the three largest billboard companies in the state, however, refused to display the billboards citing that it was 'too controversial.'
"This just goes to show how real our concerns are and how necessary our message is," Stewart said." |

Quote : | "We are a coalition of secular, humanist, nontheist, and skeptic groups across North Carolina who have come together to bring you a patriotic message; we are "one nation indivisible."
We are your friends and family, your neighbors and co-workers. Whether you are religious or not we ask you to help end official discrimination and personal prejudice against your secular neighbors because of what we believe... or don't believe.
The inspiring words "one nation indivisible" is the way the original Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892. It defined the nation as a melting pot to which people from all backgrounds and beliefs could contribute. No American was excluded in that statement.
When the phrase "under God" was inserted into the Pledge in 1954, it was a direct and deliberate insult to all Americans who do not believe in a monotheistic God and all Americans who believe in the founding ideals of this country not to establish religion.
It is ironic -- and sad -- that the words "under God" were used to divide the indivisible.
Two years later, in 1956, Congress passed an act to adopt a new national motto, this motto would supersede our former de facto national motto, the motto that our founders had given us, the motto that had served this nation well for over 150 years. Instead of the all-inclusive "E Pluribus Unum" -- Latin for "Out of Many, One" -- our new national motto became "In God We Trust," which again excludes anyone that doesn't believe in a monotheistic God.
Sadly, North Carolina takes this discrimination further. The North Carolina state constitution bars state office to "any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God." Recently, Christian activists have used this provision to try to question a duly elected Asheville City Councilperson's right to hold office. This is not only close-minded and malicious, it is unconstitutional. (The U.S. Constitution states that "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust.")
If you are not religious we hope you will join us so we can speak more loudly with one voice. But even if you are religious we hope you will support our effort to end official discrimination by reverting to the original Pledge of Allegiance and U.S. motto and removing laws like the unconstitutional one on North Carolina's books.
It's time for all North Carolinians, including those who are religious and nonreligious, to work together to help America live up to those ideals, "one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." |

Quote : | "Agnostic billboard vandalized
RALEIGH, N.C. — A billboard with the words "One Nation Indivisible" placed by a coalition of North Carolina atheists and agnostics has been vandalized.
WCNC-TV in Charlotte reported the sign on the Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte that displays an American flag behind the words has been defaced. Investigators think the words "Under God" were added late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Several billboards have been put up by the North Carolina Secular Association as a July Fourth project. The group intentionally left out the words "Under God," which were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. The group wanted to show nonreligious people are patriotic.
Charlotte spokesman William Warren says the group has filed a police report and says the billboard will be replaced. " | ]6/28/2010 12:56:28 PM |

Regardless of one's views on abortion, someone who views terrorist bombers as anything other than terrorist bombers, (let alone heroes or something,) is a terrorist sympathizer.
