I watched about the last 30 minutes of the Slovenia match

I watched about the last 10 minutes of the match today

But the fact that we actually won a match today, and advanced to the next round, definitely sparks my interest a good bit

Had we lost today, or simply tied and not advanced...soccer would go back to *yawn* status in this country, but winning was pretty big

Like it or not, for soccer to catch on big in this country, the US needs to win something...its not gonna catch on just because the rest of the world likes it...winning cures everything

the problem runs deeper than that. i mean, the '02 quarterfinals appearance may have helped grow the fanbase, but the detractors are still there using that same excuse about not winning. we live in a country where fans go nuts for sweet 16 appearances, gator bowl appearances, etc. you don't hate those teams, do you?

you just don't like it. that's fine. but don't try to rationalize it because you "hate ties" or "offsides" or any other excuse. you just don't like it because you don't like it.

today was the first WC match the US has won since 2002

i'm not asking for us to win the WC this year, although that would be pretty sweet

people just want to see improvement

but winning / getting far is the best way to extend the popularity of the sport

I love watching the US in the world cup b/c I have an interest in the outcome.

I can't really get up for DC United because I have four other teams in major leagues in DC to cheer for. DC United is like the Durham Bulls for me, if that makes sense.

It wasn't "the worst game" before we scored the goal. It was actually a very entertaining game because there were a ton of scoring opportunities for the US and we were constantly on attack. There was definitely a lot "overreacting" going on in the threads...I mean, we State fans NEVER do that...

It would have only been one of the worst results considering that we had a really good team and were predicted to get out of the group stage.

It becomes one of the "best" wins ever because honestly...even though we've done it recently, we don't get out of the group stage that much. And it was DRAMATIC. You can't get more dramatic than scoring the game winning goal in stoppage time.

I would liken it to Hodge hitting the game winner against UConn in the 2nd round, but only if NC State had never won two national championships.

How is that explanation for you??
