how do you proponents of paying players divvy that up"

I say $7,314,366 to Andrew Wiggins

And $50 to Warren so he can get some of those moon shoes that add like 48" to your vertical

YES... those are grown veterans of the industry who have "WORKED HARD" to make their millions and be where they are at... college kids don't deserve this right off the bat

and newsflash...
the corporate people were in college once too. and most of them probably not getting free tuition, boarding, meals, clothes, travel etc... then they were probably temporarily broke for the first years after college paying back their student loans and having entry level salaries

For every Ohio State and Texas, there are hundreds of other athletic departments that make little to no money. Some even are operating in the red. How does one propose paying players? Should only rhe revenue sport athletes get paid? Should it be performance based where you get a base salary and you get bonuses based on how far you go in the post-season? No one is forcing these players to go to college. There is always the Brandon Jennings route. I'd gladly kill myself in practice playing a game I love to get my college paid for and have groupies.

"newsflash..."
the "veterans of the industry" and the "corporate people" weren't physically busting their asses every day on top of their academics while they were in college. Or already making the corporations money, for that matter.

Many players aren't able to take advantage of "free education," which is a problem that's perpetuated by coaches and athletic departments.

Do they rigorously practice sports every day? And entertain thousands of people? And make people lots of money? All during their college education?

One thing almost no one mentions in this argument... I consider providing a venue to get your name out there for professional scouters to see as a part of that compensation. I guess you could always not go to school and work hard to get recognition elsewhere but being a pawn in that billion dollar industry is currently getting their face on TV. How else are they going to do that?

It's part of the system, no one forces these kids to go to college.

It's a two way street. They lay the foundation for corporations, corporations lay the foundation for them to make money should they go pro.

With the minimum age rule in the NFL and the Lebron James rule, it effectively "forces" kids to go to college.

But again, they can do what Brandon Jennings did.

So they're working incredibly hard with ridiculous schedules for "credit" and "exposure" and "a shot at the bigs!"

I see.

Who would get hurt by paying student athletes?

Enlighten me.

those people also are sometimes paid while in college, and don't generate millions of dollars for the university while they're in school

seriously, what other BILLION dollar industry has an unpaid workforce?

I'll hang up and listen

if you add up every college bball program in the nation, they probably make $300-$350 million a year

are CBS and ESPN supposed to chip in and pay players?

[Edited on April 4, 2013 at 3:06 PM. Reason : schools don't make billions a year]

but on a more practical note, how much do you propose to pay players? do all players get the same amount of money? how often are they paid?

The only way I ever see players getting paid is if some schools break away from the NCAA and express interest in paying athletes (potentially allowing them to attract some good players to them instead of to NCAA schools), thus potentially forcing the NCAA's hands

Like an ABA vs NBA thing from back in the day

Otherwise, the NCAA has absolutely no incentive to begin paying players since they're the only game in town

if the players want to get paid schools can stop offering them scholarships and can function as the actual minor leagues that they are. then the 99% of athletes who dont make it will have 4 years of minimal pay and be screwed for life. sounds awesome!

there are very specific DOL guidelines about when an internship is allowed to be unpaid, and their published rule-of-thumb is that generally unpaid interns should not benefit the company in any way. these athletes sure are benefiting some pockets. (and they also don't meet any of the requirements for unpaid interns)

I got my 6-7 figure salary from this study:
Quote :
"the average football player at an FBS - or Football Bowl Subdivision, is the highest tier in college sports - school had a fair market value of $456,612 above and beyond the value of their scholarship. The average men's basketball player had a fair market value of roughly $1.06 million over four years, not including his scholarship. (That figure is even higher at Bowl Championship Series schools: $714,000 for the average football player and $1.5 million for the average men's basketball player.)"

Yow's wiki page is pretty entertaining.

How is her actual birthday not known?

Quote :
"She said, "I spent too much time partying, and my grades reflected it. In those days we lovingly called ourselves flower children. We were very anti-establishment. I did recreational drugs back then like everyone else. To be honest with you, I don't know anybody who didn't."[1] Yow visited friends in California, but soon after returned to Gibsonville after she ran out of money."

Was never mentioned last week when the whole PNC scheduling thing was being discussed, but she deserves some credit for bringing the process back in house. The idea that we allowed the ACC to negotiate the schedule with the Hurricanes on our behalf is just mind-blowing. What did Lee Fowler do while he was here?
