Fuck! I took my car in for an oil change at 72,000 miles and now its over 81,000. Since the owner's manual recommends getting it changed every 5,000 miles or so, I essentially skipped an oil change.

Its a 1986 crown vic that was driven very very little until about 4 years ago (got it from my step-dad's grandmother who is 90 something now). Am I fucked?

I actually put oil in about 6,000 miles ago because the "check oil" light came on. But I have not got it changed since 72,000 miles.

Still running? No dash lights? Get it changed asap and you'll be fine.

Haha

If it's still running you're fine. But get it changed ASAP.

Your car will blow up MacGyver style the next time you crank it.

9K isn't that bad, the 302 is a tough bastard of an engine. If you're not seeing a check oil light or anything similar don't sweat it and just get it taken care of this weekend.

BTW, 81K miles on a 24 year old car isn't bad at all. I actually like the old Crown Vics, I had a '91 for a while.

I run my truck with 274k with 15k mile oil changes on Mobil1 Extended. But I drive it 60-75 miles a day, so it doesn't take long to get that.

Of course she just died yesterday. But that was the transmission linkage going bad, I think. Gonna find out today.

needing to change oil every 3k miles is a myth.

mfr recommendation for my 4runner is every 5k
for my jetta it's every 10k (diesel)

its not a myth, Paul Bunyan is a myth, Mothman is a myth... but here is something you can take as a fact- today's oils are NOT manufactured with the preservation of pushrod engines in mind. Anyone with a 86 Crown Victoria that wants to keep it running should religiously change the oil every 3-4k and at least try use an oil that is up to the task. I don't mean a stupid "high mileage" oil either, I mean get one with a HTHS rating of at least 3.5 (Shell Rotella T 15W40 is good) or a ACEA rating of A3/B3.
