According to multiple results in a google search for "helvetica default" (not in quotes), Helvetica and Ariel are commonly substituted for one another if one does not have the font on their system. One is default on Mac and the other is default on Windows. I did not carefully ensure that my words were a literal representation of the situation, because that results in needlessly long-winded posts.

Looking incredibly similar and being default sans serif font on their respective systems is close enough to being different versions of each other that I needn't bother to explain with any more depth.
