It seems that whenever I tell a girl that I might do something and then waiver on it a week later they tell me "But you promised"

I would just like to take this time to ask

WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

if Eric tells me he'll do something but doesn't sound super committed, I say, "Promise me." that way there is NO CONFUSION... and if he won't flat out promise I pretty much say, ok I won't take that as 100% yes >_>

Pretty much, if you're not gonna do it, just say no.

if you are, say yes.

agree with OP

I didn't promise unless

1. I said "I promise"
2. You said "Do you promise?" and I said "Yes"

agreed. or at least until you remind him 87 times.

AND

maybe they are saying "but you promised" in an effort to trick you into thinking that you did actually promise.

"Promise" is like "I love you" in that I'll never say except for the rarest of circumstances

Makes it too personal...I prefer to keep my relationships on a surface level

i like to think that if i don't know when i can get to it i always use 50/50 words like "i'll try to go with you next time to visit your mother" and "let's see about going to visit the worlds largest ball of twine"

If I promise something, I do it.

As a result, I only promise things that I know I will do.

So in the end, I tend to be pretty non-committal.

I don't think I've ever made Peter "promise" to do anything and I don't think he's ever disappointed me by not doing something. But then again we usually don't make plans until the last minute.

if a girl ever asks "do you promise?" then it feels like a trap. and will almost assuredly not be done

"try" when spoken by a man seems to usually means no.

so why not just say no!

because "no, i will not go with you to visit your mother" leaves no hope.

whereas "try" at least implies you'll think about it

Woman: "will you get x done?"

Man: "yes i will try"

*sits on couch all day. thinks about the thing he is supposed to do for a split second.*

Woman: "did you do it?"

Man: "no, but i tried"

*woman kills man*

trying seems dangerous to me

and you people wonder why we ask for promises!

see i think it is more violent when you just say no and you go ahead and get whatever is going to happen over with

than when you say i'll try, get someone's hopes up, and then have to deal with the wrath

of course in a relationship any course of action you choose is always going to rear its head at some point in the future

thats more of a different example

it should go like this:

Thursday:
Woman: Will you get x done over the weekend?

Man: I'll try to get to it

Sunday:
Woman: Did you get that thing I asked you done?

Man: Sorry I didn't get to it

Woman still kills man, but if she asks in the morning, its less of a try and more of a "i got too many other things on my plate"

hahaha.

i think i pretty much take a "yes" as a promise

and any other answer as a "no" (try, might, maybe, i'll think about it, silence, etc)

so i try to annoy my way into a yes in all circumstances and then when something doesn't get done i break out "you PROMISED"

and depending on the circumstances i couple that with or

Also, it sets a woman up to say "DO OR DO NOT, THERE IS NO TRY" which wins them major points.

Though so far this has never happened.

true enough
I try to just keep it simple and laugh at everything

I do agree that if you're gonna take a stand on not doing something, it is generally better, as a rule, to have it out then and there

but if you are trying to get laid that day (which of course you are) it is sometime convenient just to agree halfheartedly, and leave well enough alone.

Man: Don't go shopping, we don't have money
Woman: I know honey.
Man: Well last time I told you this, you bought a shirt for $80.
Woman: I know, but I couldn't help myself, it was on sale and it was sooo cute.
Man: We don't have that kind of money!
Woman: OKAY I GET YOUR FUCKING POINT I WONT BUY MYSELF ANYTHING EVER AGAIN!!!!

(that next day)

Man: Honey, can you please tell me why my credit card was declined when I went to pay for lunch?
Woman: Well I felt bad about yesterday, so I bought 'us' some lingerie to make up for it!
Man: FUCK. --- (punches wall) --- SHIT!

^^lol

oh yea i forgot about the getting laid part

that always seems to complicate matters!

^ in your world you assume the man is the money maker. in my world, woman is the kingdom ruler and makes the bling. or ideally. whenever i find a lawyering job so i will be using MY money to buy things i WANT and NEED. i don't plan on getting married anytime soon so that will not be a conversation anyone will have with me.

To get married for benefits is stupid seeing how you lose a magnitude of 10 on the Richter scale greater than what you save when you get divorced.

For some reason if you say "I might be up for that" they interpret it as "I want to do that and will make plans to do so."

I like the word promise.

I don't like when people let you down though.

I like to surround myself with people that do the things they say and say the things they do.
