Anyone have any opinions on these? Which do you like better? Which is easier to learn? Pros? Cons?

I'm looking to buy one for my son and I

are ripsticks the things where you're on a stick and you swivel the two ends

those look stupid as fuck and incredibly hard to use, and limiting in what you can use them for

Rip sticks are more difficult to learn how to ride than a skateboard. Also, they are best suited for flat land travel. Battling up a hill will wear you out, you'll end up just carrying the board. Unless you're pumping while going down, you'll lose control and wipe out.

Growing up, I had a skateboard. It was meh. A rip stick would have been cool.

As of right now, I have a longboard. It's fun to ride but also can be dangerous on steep down hill runs.

skateboards are easier at slow speeds. ripsticks can be tricky to get started but i think they are easier at speed (don't get speed wobbles) and also easier to carve on a rip stick.

The major difference, from interviewing a 7 year old boy that owns both, is that a skateboard you have to constantly push yourself to accelerate, while you can propel a ripstick without ever touching the ground.

With the right skateboard you CAN propel yourself without touching the ground, and do it faster than 10mph... Plus it will handle speed far better than a ripstick (plus none of the gay feet going opposite directions) and actually grip a turn, BUT we are talking about a pretty expensive skateboard because you have to get the right equipment. Look into long-distance pumping (LDP) and slalom skateboarding... The main difference between the two being length, but what sets them apart from a 'regular' skate is grippy, lipped wheels, very turny truck in the front, and stiffer, 'tracking' truck in the rear. This allows you to pump the board effectively to propel yourself, and I should note that the difference between a pump and a carve is that a pump will gain speed, a carve will usually reduce speed... Blah blah blah

If anyone who already skates or longboards wants to try a setup like I'm talking about let me know, we'll go skate.

[Edited on July 12, 2010 at 7:23 PM. Reason : It doesn't have to be terribly expensive, there are deals out there. just have to know what to get]

I think i might have sounded like a douche in that post but it was just sort of hurried. I'd recommend a longboard of some sort over a ripstick or shortboard, though ripsticks can be pretty fun but the motions between that and skateboarding do not translate well. Being able to propel yourself without pushing is nice but not at all necessary to have a good time. Just don't get a popsickle stick with tiny hard wheels and it will be all good. Also experiment with wedging (changing the truck's steering angles) and bushing hardnesses... Very rarely does a stock setup ride as well as it will with some tweaking.
