Jeffrey Fisher, a senior at North Carolina State University, said a tuition increase will create a financial hardship for him. “I might have to get another job on the side while I’m in school. If not that, pull loans through my financial aid, which I really don't want to do that,” Fisher said. Dustin Minor, a N.C. State sophomore, said tuition hikes appear necessary at this point to address campuses needs. “They need more money somewhere to keep the same level of education. If they're exhausting all possible forms of getting that money, than, if it's going to have to come from us, then so be it,” Minor said. The amount of increase varies across the state. In-state undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State would likely see the largest increase. UNC Wilmington, Elizabeth City State University and Fayetteville State University would see the smallest. Bowles will make the final determination on the amount of increases for each campus Wednesday. Some schools have decided to phase the increase in over a two-year period."

Tuition went up 150% while I was in school. As time goes on it takes more an more money to go up 150% in just a few years.

I'd be interested in knowing how much tuition was in the 50s -60s. Taking the rate of growth over the past decade or so and extrapolating backward, not the actual 50s - 60s tuition.

it's practicable--as in able to put into practice--something i think the state could manage with scant effort.

or by the numbers:

there are 175,000 undergrads in the UNC system
155,000 of those are classified in-state
average tuition is ~$3,000 for in-state students
annual operating expenses for the UNC system is ~$2.2 billion
annual state revenue is ~$20 billion

so, eliminating tuition completely would cost about $465 million, or 21% of UNC opex, or 2% of state revenue
