NCAA investigators returned to the University of North Carolina campus on Wednesday to continue their investigation. "Yes, the NCAA was on campus today (Wednesday)," UNC's Director of Athletics Dick Baddour confirmed to WRAL."

UNC always seems to have this type of lucky shit. If they still get grilled by the NCAA this guy immediately becomes my favorite graduate of Chapel Hill.

I know this is going overboard a bit, and stuff like this happens all the time but its fun to speculate.

Quote :
"East Chapel Hill hires a new football coach

BY JOE JOHNSON

jjohnson@heraldsun.com; 419-6667

East Chapel Hill has a new football coach after the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board approved the hiring of Bill Renner on Thursday night.

Renner will teach physical education at the school. He replaces Darian Harris, whose teaching position was cut because of system-wide budget reductions. Harris compiled a 2-21 record with the Wildcats in two seasons at the helm. East Chapel Hill's struggles predate Harris' tenure as the Wildcats have not won more than one game in a season since 2004.

Renner comes to East Chapel Hill from Lake Braddock (Va.) High School, where he was an assistant coach. Before that he was a successful head school coach at West Springfield (Va.) High School where he was 57-47 in 10 seasons before stepping down to follow his son Bryn's collegiate career at UNC.

Renner was a punter for Virginia Tech and the NFL's Green Bay Packers. He has a B.S. in Physical Education and Health, as well as an M.S. in Exercise Physiology from Virginia Tech.

Renner was among a group of about 15 applicants for the position, according to East Chapel Hill athletic director Ray Hartsfield.

Renner will be formally introduced at East Chapel Hill today."

I understand, i'd want to be near my son too. But a teacher/coach was "let go" because of "budget issues" and then you turn around and hire another one? He was also 1 of 15, i guess his son playing in ChapelHill had nothing to do with that.

I googled around:
Quote :
"
But Harris himself knows the system is so short on cash that cutbacks are inevitable, even in a well-to-do college town like Chapel Hill.

"I've explained the economics of it to the players. It's a matter of economics," Harris said. "My enrollment was down this year."

Harris teaches business courses, electives at East Chapel Hill, such as sports marketing.

Ironically, given the success of sport as an industry and the need for job skills in current economic times, not enough students signed up for his electives, compared to other courses at East.

It's almost exactly what happened to Chapel Hill High School basketball coach Tod Morgan last semester. His physical education teaching post was cut at CHHS.

But physical education is not an elective. In Morgan's case, his principal and CHCCS administrators scrambled to find him another post within the system.

Harris is not expecting the same rescue."

Dude taught electives that not enough people signed up for, and Renner teaches phys ed.

Yeah, I don't really see anything wrong with his hiring. The guy is more than qualified for the job: BS/MS in his field of teaching, 10 years as a head football coach, D1 and NFL experience as a player. With a resume like that, who wouldn't give this guy a legit shot at the job?

Lest we not forget that Philip Rivers' father relocated to raleigh to coach HS football when he came to play for us. Nothing wrong with this.

Agreed. Let's not turn into that annoying group of folks that always looks for something tiny to blow it up into something huge.

^ that's what i tried to (at least) sufficiently caveat my statements. I'm kind of sure everything was above board but it just struck me: we're letting a teacher/coach go because of the budget. oh snap, we need a football coach.

You mean they fired a losing coach who had their position eliminated due to lack of enrollment and replaced him with a guy who has had success as a head football coach and just so happened to be a solid candidate for a vacant teaching position? I guess I'm just having trouble understanding how this would even strike you as odd.

^^

I think you're missing that Football coach is not an official position at a high school. The teacher who was also a football coach taught classes that had low enrollment. That position was cut.

Another position existed for a physical education teacher. This guy they hired teaches that, and can coach football.

The only thing that i scratch my head about is how the text modlin posted talked about the other teacher who teaches PE had that position axed due to budgets, but now they apparently have the budget for a PE teacher?

probably nothing more than mismanagement of funds there, but still a little weird.

"But first-year Cincinnati coach Butch Davis sees Big Dogs. He was stunned to see the size of the UConn players, especially 6-foot-7, 323-pound OG Zach Hurd, at media day.

"I've watched that program grow," Davis said. "It's amazing what they've done in such a short time.""

Evidently, Butch Davis resigned from UNC to take over at Cincy.

"My opinion is not just based off of emotion, I really believe this team is going to win the ACC. I am only worried about the games against FSU and LSU as possible losses. So, I am predicting a 10-2 season, and an over-all record of 11-3. I think they'll have a rematch with FSU in the ACC championship game, and pull out a very hard, slim victory. This will be the best conference championship game in all of the nation."

This post from that SFN article makes me incredibly optimistic but I'm still trying to stay grounded.
Quote :
"The biggest detail to his info was that the NCAA is trying to determine whether or not any of our coaches knew about this party. If any of our coaches knew about this there will be sanctions against the program. Then he mentioned something about “Black Santa” and his agent being on the hot seat. Player #8's father also hurt our case with the info he came forward with. Not sure if this was something on TWITTER or was told to an investigator. He also said minimum of 5 maximum of 8 players suspended for this season. That blew me away because I never thought that many players were involved. He didn’t know the names he was only given a number. Other than #8 and #9 I don’t know who the other players are. If I could go back in time I would destroy TWITTER.
My man is very credible. He wouldn’t lie. He has a friend that works at the NCAA in Indy that was telling him what he knew off the record."
