Fair enough, but most people won't remember that.

I still think he could have come out of this with a great public image and a pretty good chance at most other jobs in college football, but he went into "protect the program at all costs" mode and torpedoed any chance of credibility.

Of course, that would have required giving up his 216 phone records and those may have made everything a moot point. Could be he saw the corrupt situation at UNC and just said "Hey, that's totally the place for me!!!"

Haha, Adam and Joe pushing the "What doesn't UNC want us to know?" angle with the Drew Davis, appeasing the Davis family to keep things quiet.

bullshit

most people who have been following college football should remember that

it was a huge deal and again, forced the ncaa to make that rule. Now Butch Davis has been responsible for updating the NCAA rule book TWICE.

But honestly, I don't think butch was the root problem at unc, as this academic bullshit is showing.

it's just harder to run a tight ship and not let details of shady shit out with 100 guys on your team as opposed to 12.

In auto racing that'd be considered a compliment for the engineer.

"Students looking to enroll in a summer class at UNC-Chapel Hill taught by Julius Nyang’oro were likely to hit a roadblock as soon as they went online.

Of the 38 courses the university says he was responsible for over five summers, 26 of them listed a maximum capacity for just one student. For many students, that would be a sign to go look for another course.

But university records show more than one student enrolled in most of these courses. And often, a substantial share of those students were athletes.

If this were to happen at any other school in NC, the hammer of God would drop and crush the souls of the school and athletes. Documents and records from decades ago would just miraculously show up, investigations would be thoourogh and swift, and the media would have a field day.

But since it happened to them, I guess the everyone is expected to kinda shrug it off and move along. That is what makes me angry.

from the article above...
Quote :
"The university has released no information about its interviews with students regarding how they got into the classes; it also has revealed little from its interview with Nyang’oro.
At the recent UNC Board of Governors meeting, the N&O attempted to ask Chancellor Holden Thorp and others about what Nyang’oro said in his interview.
Davis interjected.
“You need to talk to (Nyang’oro) about that,” she said. “That’s not for us to answer.”"

really? how is that "not for you to answer" about your interviews with a person suspected of and damned near proved to have committed academic fraud?

Another good part of that article:

Quote :
"Records released last month showed that one class – AFAM 280 – was launched two days before the start of a summer 2011 semester and immediately filled with 18 football players and a former player. Academic advisers to the football players knew the class did not meet and only involved a term paper, but still placed the athletes in the classes.

The advisers told university officials they were not aware something was wrong with the class. It did not have a one-seat maximum; by then, the university had changed to a more refined enrollment system that provided professors other options to allow control over who gets into classes.

The AFAM 280 class took place a year into an NCAA investigation into impermissible financial gifts and tutoring help to football players that so far appears unrelated to the academic fraud case.

"

One year into the investigation and the cheating is still rampant and blatant. LOIC please.

LOIC doesn't accurately portray what's going on over there. The institution is in full control of the cheating

Except this isn't happening. The n&o keeps publishing new stories that are syndicated nationwide and everything is still very much being investigated.

Do you think they wave the ban hammer like a toy?

^^^So there's an actual ongoing investigation then? From people that matter? From my perspective it seems like the newspapers are desperately trying to get someone's attention but no one seems to care. Sprinkle in an "internal investigation" performed by UNC, for UNC and that about sums it up.

SBI is conducting a criminal probe of D'r. N'yang'o'ro and the BOG appointed a 4-member committee to review the UNC internal report. That committee will probably recommend launching a full investigation since it has become so apparent that UNC's report was spin and damage control.

Also, the NCAA should revisit the campus, but no word on that yet.

I hate that EVERY article mentions that NC State was in a similar situation a long time ago and it "led to the departures of coach Jim Valvano and Chancellor Bruce Poulton."

It's like every time an article comes out the author is saying, "UNC is in the shit, remember when NCSU was in the shit like this a long time ago?"

It feels a lot like pointing fingers.

^^ i don't mind it, except that they usually fail to mention that the NCAA found no major infractions and even the allegations weren't even remotely on the same plane as what's already been proven in evidence with what's going on at UNCCH with regards to both athletics -and- academics

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8143772/college-football-most-underrated-coaching-jobs-nation

"North Carolina: UNC is always going to be a basketball school, but there's no reason its football program shouldn't thrive in the ACC. North Carolina is one of the top academic schools in the country, and recruiting players to picturesque Chapel Hill shouldn't be difficult. There's a lot of room for growth in the ACC, and teams can move up the pecking order quickly with a couple of good seasons. New Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora will have to overcome NCAA sanctions in the beginning, however."

It's obvious the people who write those stories don't really put effort into them. They regurgitate the same tired perceptions that they've had about schools for years.

You won't need book smarts to remain academically eligible at North Carolina and the pine trees in Chapel Hill are quite the sight to behold.
