He will be joining the New York Red Bulls.

I hope this world cup fever spills into MLS and American TV will pick up more soccer.

haha, I did not post this to have a discussion on if this is a good plan or not.

Just throwing some information out there. Also assuming that a lot of "soccer sucks" and "soccer is for pussies" comments get made, but those are funny too.

No no, soccer is great.

It's just that literally 99% of America has no idea who Henry is.

I would have said at least half knew who Beckham was, and that didn't do anything at all.

this guy.

Also, I realize it was confusing bc the op was two thoughts morphed into one but the [world cup fever and tv picking up more soccer] comment was completely independent of the Henry thought.

People who already know who he is are "soccer nuts" by comparison to most Americans and they already watch MLS. Everyone else has no clue who he is - so 0% chance of MLS FEVER in America.

actually, they've done this before...signed a formerly awesome but thoroughly washed-up player to come play in the U.S.

they got fucking Pelé to come play here, in hopes that it would stimulate American interest in soccer and increase the prestige of the American league

it did neither

then they signed David Beckham, and that didn't really work either

and now we get an old, aching, shadow-of-a-Thierry-Henry

maybe if Lio Messi came and played for the New York Red Bulls RIGHT NOW, Americans might develop a bit more of an interest in soccer

but why the hell would he do that? the U.S. league sucks

we're just chasing our tails, here

^^ Again, nobody knows who Leo Messi is either - unless he fucks a Spice Girl

[Edited on July 16, 2010 at 9:49 AM. Reason : I have no clue who the dude is, for example]

^^^Money, really. They'd have to pay Messi like $10 mill at least.

^^
I'm not sure that Messi would piss away the best years of his marvelous career in such a subpar league as the MLS for any amount of money

the difference is that Lio Messi actually is one of the 3 best players in the world, say

as opposed to Pele, Beckham and Henry, whose best days were long behind them when they came to play in the U.S.

if we brought somebody who actually was phenomenal, rather than merely had been, a different result might be achieved

reason we know who Pele is: Anytime you drop something and bounce it off your foot, a smartass will say "Nice one Pele"

reason we know who Beckham is: He fucked a Spice Girl

reason we know who Henry is: We don't

reason we know who Messi is: We don't

i guess noone was listening. I don't think they are bringing Henry to stimulate interest. I was hoping that the world cup spill over interest would.

the Henry thought was seperate

it didn't do either of those things, but it did make the cosmos tremendously popular

motherfuckers sold out giant stadium for a soccer game between two american clubs.
