1) realistically
2) ideal dream scenario
3) do your number 1 & number 2 share any common features?

realistically: I'm 65-70 and have finally got enough in reserves and stocks or whatever to retire and live within whatever means that gives me. I'm probably also dead.
ideal dream scenario: tomorrow i win the lottery. i pay off all my debt with millions upon millions to spare.
3)nope. 7/18/2010 5:02:21 AM |

by where i meant more in locational terms rather than how much money you think you'll have/want to have. when you're 70 and dead, is there a specific location you have in mind for that? but feel free to include what you'll be doing in that location/why you picked it.

haha oops.
1) probably whatever city I end up getting "the job" in. I'd say there's a 90% chance it's in the charlotte area
2) either the NC or SC coast. 7/18/2010 5:09:02 AM |

1) near the coast of NC
2) i run a bait and tackle shop near the coast of NC. it's the type of place where regular folks drop in on their way to work for a cup of coffee and to talk fishing and stuff. i make just enough money running the shop to fund my own personal fishing.
3) obviously, yes 7/18/2010 5:22:41 AM |

few acres(3-6) of land back off the road, far enough back that you can't see it from the road but not so far that you don't get the inclining that someone lives back there
Forested land, with at least a good strong stream or maybe small river, I want to clear some of the forest and grow a couple of crops(tomatos, peppers, peas, beans, squash, maybe a pear tree or a couple of peach trees if i'm in the right area) nothing too fancy. I want to have the house built into the land
something like
oh yeah and a structure roughly the size of a shipping container buried that I'd use for a workshop for experiments and projects
Ideally it would all be powered by an array of radioisotope thermal generators and/or solar

realistically: somewhere in the carolinas, midwayish between mountains and sea
ideally: villa & vinyard on the ligurian coast of italy.
and no, there's not really much overlap between the two 7/18/2010 8:56:52 AM |

realistically: depends. the super boring option would be out in NW nash county on a big piece of property where i can't see my neighbors. a better option while staying in NC would be in the mountains somewhere, similar piece of property...although i don't handle the windy mtn roads too well. the best, sorta realistic option, is in whitefish, mt.
dream: 100+ acres in MT, outside of the whitefish/kalispell area. dairy cows that i don't have to raise but can pretend that i do (i don't even know that raising cows there is possible, the harsh winters make me think not). an animal rescue kinda thing in the "backyard", separate from the house, set up kinda like the wake spca. horses, ones you ride and a couple of big draft horses (belgian, clydesdale). some mini goats, maybe a couple of sheep. all of these (except for companion animals) managed mainly by someone else i'm paying, so i can just play. big pond/small lake for fishing & swimming. nice house, but not huge, tons of storage, big conditioned garage for chris. gun range.
common factors: outside of city limits, can't see neighbors, AWAY FROM PEOPLE 7/18/2010 9:10:00 AM |

1) in a rest home/retirement center near where ever my sister or my hypothetical future kids are living at the time.
2) some where warm.
3) no. honestly, I don't think retirement is going to be a financially viable option for me, so I've never given it much thought 7/18/2010 10:53:58 AM |

1) out west somewhere where the grandchildren are.
2) out of an rv for months/years at a time. Campground host, tour guides, or just as visitors ourselves. Where depends on where else we have stayed or still want too see.
3) And the we refers to the wife and i. Out west or traveling is a good happy medium.

interesting question, i've never really thought about what my retirement goals are, location-wise.
after seeing my parents' reaction to becoming grandparents, i could see myself trying to stay near my future grandkids.
as far as a place where i would enjoy life in the sense of escaping from pre-retirement responsibilities and pressures, i really have no idea
in fact, after thinking about it a few minutes, i don't think the typical response of some secluded location, with a "simpler" life appeals to me at all. i'd probably just stay where i live, and vacation every now and then to those types of places

1) NC coast or Charleston (already have home(s) on NC coast so very likely)
2) Prague or Amsterdam (could be just because I got back from Europe and loved those cities)
3) 1st is more realistic b/c I don't speak Dutch or good Czech and if I get married I'm sure our priorities will change and we'll want to be wherever our shit-head, delinquent children will be 7/18/2010 2:55:42 PM |

1 - I'd like to retire either to the southwest US or to Brazil.
2 - no reason to think I won't. It's more a question of whether I'm able to retire in my 50s or 60s. 7/18/2010 3:16:11 PM |

1) Probably in or near a medium to large sized city in on the east coast somewhere from NC up to MA west coast between CA, OR, or WA... places where my husband and I are both likely to find work.
2) I love Boston, but its a bit cold in the winter, maybe with half a century of global warming and it'll be perfect. A nice beach near Anaheim could be nice. I've never been to Hawaii but always wanted to, so that might be an option. I'd love to do a month in Spain, but I don't think my Spanish is strong enough to get me by for retirement. I don't know a lot about Puerto Rico, but I've certainly scene beautiful places there, and in places like New Zealand. Ideally somewhere not too cold.
3) I grew up in a small, mountain adjacent, town in western NC. So for retirement I might want to mix it up a bit with either a city or a beach. So I think I can find something that meets a lot of what I'm looking for.
If I'm going for ideal it'd probably be in either the lighter orange (like NC not the dark orange like Florida), the brown which is probably best for me, or the yellow. Anaheim, CA seems to be right in that ideal, just a little cooler than NC but not by much in the brown area on the map, and near a beach, near enough to a big city, and all that and according to wikipedia "Anaheim ranks as one of the safest cities of its size in the nation."

^okay, so maybe the better question for you is...
1) where do you want to raise your kids (realistically)
2) where do you want to raise your kids (after winning a small lottery)
3) what, if anything, do these locations have in common
And being able to have family & friends visit would make me be a little more likely, even in the dream scenario, not move somewhere that would mean they'd need a passport to come visit. 7/18/2010 7:46:44 PM |

^do you prefer beaches, mountains, hills, small towns, big cities, something in between, warm weather, cool weather, are there certain locations that tend to offer more jobs/advancement in your particular field, do you like to ski, do you like to swim, do you like to hike, are you cool with public transit or do you want to use a car to get around for the part, do you have a sig other & what would work for them, do you speak any other languages, how important is proximity to a Bojangles, where do your friends & family lived, have you ever fallen in love with a place you vacationed or visited?
answering some of those questions might get you started 7/18/2010 7:58:19 PM |

unfortunately, my answer won't be any more exciting in that context.
1) here -- around the triangle
2) i'd still stay around here
3) the common denominator is family (and to a slightly lesser extent, friends). My wife and I both have our whole families in the area, as well as all of our friends, and for me what matters is not where I am, but who I'm with. All of these exotic locations that people mention would quickly lose their novelty for me. I love traveling and visiting said places, but the mystique would disappear if I actually lived there. I'm pretty comfortable with the fact that life is mostly pretty mundane, and trying to keep some constant level of excitement is an exercise in futility.
I realize that not everyone has such a close-knit family situation, and what I find to be ideal is repulsive to others.7/18/2010 11:49:48 PM |
