I really like the Greek salad at Raleigh Times. Helios also had great salads but I heard they completely redid their menu last month so I have no idea what's on their menu now.

The Rockford used to have good salads.
No idea if they still do.
I mean, they used to have a good Chicken Prosciutto. Key words in that sentence being "used to".

you guys should just start PMing me these Raleigh food questions...

the answer(s) are:

Sweet Tomatoes (extensive salad bar) on Capital - hate to go with chains but this place is tops
Whole Food's on Wade

and....

Boylan Bridge Brewpub - actually has great homemade dressings, etc.

edward's mill bar and grill has really yummy homemade bleu cheese dressing if you're into that

i heard capital club 16 also has delicious salads with homemade bleu cheese

HOWEVER

my favorite is the whole foods salad bar

the raleigh times also has yummy salads (mmmm balsamic chicken on top ftw!)
village draft has some decent salads
moonlight has a delicious greek salad
and i actually LOVE the greek salad at mellow mushroom

sweet tomatoes is ok but it isn't that fabulous. its just large, but it doesn't have anything special about it. there are more exotic toppings to be found at the whole foods salad bar! i would only go to sweet tomatoes with a coupon!

lol

i like sweet tomatoes but it is blingy. so i'd rather just shell out the $$ for whole foods and at least get the yummier toppings

but ST is HUGE

and you get the soup too (and bread)

I can't condone the mention of Sweet Tomatoes & Whole Foods.
I love both those places (well, I only sort of like ST), but making a good salad is much more than putting out a bunch of bins full of salad mix just like the ones you could buy at Harris Teeter along with a bunch of toppings.

I'm trying to think of great salads right now, but aside from the first iteration of The Rockford I'm drawing a blank. Pipers in the Park has excellent salad. As does Zoes Kitchen on Oberlin. William's Gourmet Kitchen in RTP has a good salad too. I don't know if they'd be good enough to be "the best" though. I don't eat out much anymore and when I do I'm going for the meat & potatos, not the salad, so that's not helping.

actually hands down i must say that the melting pot has the best salad i ever fuckin tasted

i have actually wanted to go jst to get the salad, i cant remember which one it was but it was perfect and with the way it was balanced i wouldnt be surprised if the same quality was reflected in all of there salad items

perfect size, good toppings not overdone or too large

i dono but i would assume at those places you build your own salad i could be wrong, not a fair comparison

but i doubt they could hold a candle anyway, just sayin

Nantucket Grill has excellent salads too. Never been to the Raleigh location, but there is one up in the Falls River/Durant area iirc. I recommend the blackened salmon salad or the pine nut salad.

sun-dried tomatoes, grape tomatoes, asparagus, onions, cucumbers,
pine nuts and soba pasta noodles, mixed with lemon basil dressing, served over fresh garden greens"

No, I'm being 100% serious. A salad prepared by a skilled chef that surprises your sense of taste has the potential to be far better than slapping together a bunch of ingredients that you happen to like on a salad bar.

you can make this same sort of thing WITH the right salad bar. that is why the ones with "exotic" ingredients are better than say, harris teeter.

What local salad bars offer tender pieces of blackened salmon that are fresh off the grill?

Whole Foods.

Well, it's at their deli... right next to the salad bar.
And cold, of course... but sometimes there's salad-worthy stuff at the hot bar.

I'm hearing a lot of things that don't quite add up to the blackened salmon salad at Nantucket while still costing more. I've had that blackened salmon at Whole Foods...Shit was like $9 for a little piece.

p.s.,
I eat at Whole Foods like 3 times a week and I'm proud to say I've never touched their tofu.
I prefer real food.

^ WTF are you talking about? I eat great combinations of meat and vegetables; not coagulated soy milk pressed into a mold and chopped into blocks. If it had any flavor (as in most cheeses) I'd consider it as a possible addition to already good foods.

Not to mention the negative effects of plant estrogen in soy on men.
