I went to Chuck's (for the 2nd time) 2 weekends ago and ordered a simple burger with just American cheese on it, and I requested medium (though I know legally it is supposed to be medium well). I ordered this simple burger b/c I've found it is an excellent foundation meal before a long night of boozing it up

Anyway it came out and the inside of the burger was a deep reddish pink all the way through. It was cooked to perfection in my opinion.

As to that above list, maybe I should visit MoJo's again b/c in my memory there was nothing special about their burger at all but it keeps popping up on peoples' burger lists.

Then why do people keep ranking them? In my memory they were on par with 5 Guys...and unlike some other posters I don't have a hard on for 5 Guys either.

I like the burgers at Mojo's, but they are nowhere near the best in Raleigh.

I used to think the Times had the best burger (when you could get one medium rare), followed by the PR, but the Times has disappointed me the last couple times I've been.

I haven't tried Chuck's yet, but I look forward to doing so soon.

MoJoe's is probably rated better because its n00bs and drunks eating the burgers.

The Times food quality has gone to shit.

Chucks is really good, like epic, not sure about the "best"

I will say that Backyard Bistro is one of the most under rated places around here when it comes to food, I had a burger there the other day that would make you want to kick the dog.

I don't agree with that Mojoes rating at all. I mean, they are good, but not THAT good.
I have not tried Raleigh Times, Cloos, Only Burger, Chucks, etc but the ones I have tried below, my own personal rating out of 10.

Draft - 9/10
Mojoes - 6/10
Red Robin - 6/10
Five Guys - 3/10
Chargrill - 2/10

Burger was definitely not as good the last time I was at the Times.

Still haven't been to Chuck's, but none of the burger options there appeal to me that much. Kind of a simple dude when it comes to burgers.

I agree. it's been going downhill for at least a year, or whenever they fired their last head chef.

^the simple burger (Bear In Heaven) is pretty solid there. I get it with malt vinegar aioli instead of mayo. way better.

I do think MoJos has gotten better in the last couple months, maybe it's just because I get a fried egg on my burger, and I only go there after 10pm when burgers are half priced (seriously, only time I think it's worth it). So yeah, fried egg and half-price probably has a lot to do with it.

Chuck's is the best currently. PR's is still good, the Times has gotten a little inconsistent, et cetera.

Eh? When did the law change if that's so funny? The NC law for the longest time has been ground beef must be cooked at least medium well.

You can order a burger however you want it. On my last visit I had a burger with cheese and nothing else.

Nevermind, I guess it's not particularly well known. If the beef is ground on premises, it can be served rare or medium rare. Chuck's and PR both grind their beef in-house--and I'm sure plenty of other places do too.

^^That's actually a myth and isn't true.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/17/north-carolina-rare-burger-ban_n_861306.html

However there's a chance that NC is changing the rules, and it could be in effect by September 1st.

^I stand corrected. So what's the deal with places like PR who are in the state capitol but advertise on the menu that you can get burgers rare? I guess they just bite the bullet on their health department demerits?

Up until a year ago you you could get it medium rare/rare if the restaurant ground the meat in house. The restaurants that did this were: Player's Retreat, Raleigh Times, and a few others. It got popular enough that it kind of caught on and Chuck's and all those other places specializing in burgers opened or jumped on the fad. I think even Natty Green's ground the burger in house and Tir na Nog started doing it too.

There really is no comparison because a rubber-like grisled slop unfit for a zombie-mutant and a burger ground in house and cooked to a proper temp for beef.

BUT YOU GUYS CANNOT CHOOSE TO EAT A BURGER MEDIUM RARE--IT COULD HAVE A PARASITE OR COME FROM CONAGRA WITH SHIT IN IT.

God NC is a sissy state. Maybe they will jump on the bandwagon with California and ban foie gras too.

The only time I've ever ordered a burger medium-rare as also the only time I've ever had severe food poisoning. Bad luck Brian. Then again, since the "chefs" were a couple of 16 year olds, maybe not the brightest move. Still, never again.

I was eating at Chucks one night when I overheard what I think is the most apt comment about their burgers from the neighboring table. "Dude! This is what Cookout tastes like when drunk."

Does MoJoes only do half-price burgers after 10 now? They used to be a dollar, at which point it was the best burger deal in town.

^If those burgers were a dollar, they should be run out of business with crowds every night.

But nah, last year at least they've been half price. Still a pretty damn good price if you're hungry post-10PM. And they have amazing onion rings, though it's really because of the sauce they serve them in.

However, I'd never go to MoJoe's for anything other than a half-priced burger. Definitely not a destination for booze...

^,^^ their burgers used to be $1 after 10 but the service was beyond shitty. no one at our table would EVER get the right burger and we'd come weekly and order almost the same thing every time. the price went to $2 but the service remained the same and we just stopped going.

at one point after waiting 15 min for someone to take my DRINK order, I got up and took the serving pitcher of water and a 3 straws to fashion one long enough for the pitcher. no one even noticed when they finally came to take my order.

they had a good topping selection but i often received a dry, overdone burger.
