i've been thinking about getting a pet for where i live now. I work 10 hour days and usually am away from home between 6am-7:30pm. I've been thinking about getting a cat but i wouldn't be able to let it outside so thats a no go. Anyone got any good ideas?

If you get a cat that has never been outside then it won't have the need/want to go outside. Two cats are the answer.

cats don't need to go outside to be happy

and they're great because you can leave them for a weekend and not worry

get them at the same time if you get 2. it will make it LOADS easier. well 2 kitties.

i thought 2 cats were the answer but i didn't get them at the same time. they still don't really care for each other.

I had a cat, if you even attempted to take it outside it would claw your face off. This sounds like the solution to your problem.

I can't do a cat because i'm on the second floor and can't let it out. I'm not doing an indoor cat. Don't like the idea. I refuse to have an indoor only cat. Besides if the cat can go outside at will you don't need a litter box

If I left my cats alone for 10 hours a day they'd destroy the entire apartment. I have never owned cats as clingy as they are

hahahaha

my fat cat is SUPER clingy BUT she doesn't destroy things when she's left alone so that is fine

she's just a little needy. ok a lot needy when i'm actually there

my 1/2 retarded kitten is not needy though and jsut plays by herself and does idiotic shit. if you can find one like her it will be perfect!

PLUS she is a runt and never grew so her poops are still very petite.

If you get a cat, either get a young kitten or a cat that is already an indoor cat. I really wouldn't recommend a kitten, though, as they're pretty energetic, and it's not nice to leave them alone so much. Try looking on craigslist for a cat that's 6-12 months old, that is litter-trained and an indoor cat.

Also, declawing is mean. Buy scratching posts that are not in any way similar to your furniture.

for some reason my cats don't really scratch on anything furniture wise

they just pull that stuff down underneath my mattress and make a hammock and are content after that

which is good cause i don't agree w/ declawing either

but they also LOVE these cardboard scratch pad things that you can buy at target

- Something that can sustain itself for long periods of time, independently.
- something that can "recognize" you.

Cats do need to go outside.

Just because you kept yours inside and now it fears or doesn't understand being outdoors does not mean it would not have lived a much healthier and happier life if it had been allowed to go outside.

Imagine how great your life would be if you only had 2,000 sq ft. or less to roam.

There, I said it. Boom...Headshot.

A pet isn't an accessory.

My cat uses the toilet. I can leave him alone for days.... (I don't often, though.)

Seconded. Reptiles make the best pets, especially for an apartment.

Maybe he just wants a companion..

I think he's being pretty responsible by looking for a pet that fits into his lifestyle rather than going and buying a puppy then leaving it in a crate or by itself 12+ hours a day

Is there anything wrong with that. Its not like i'm going to get rid of it when i leave. I just miss having a pet.

^ that is exactly why i am asking so i don't get something that requires a lot of attention. Like an older (3-4 years) cat would be great. One that i just have to put food down for and if he shows up when i'm here great if not whatever.

Honestly, a reptile sounds like your best bet. I know some people may think it's real, but my snake is actually very cuddly but likes to keep to himself for the most part. He's clean (except when he takes like massive shits after shedding, but that's not every day, nor every week) and he's quiet. Snakes take a bit of work to set them up, but once you have that straight and their feeding schedule down, they require little maintenance compared to a dog or cat.

Plus, they're just awesome.
