my friend uses magicjack but he's not paying attention to me right now so I can't tell if you can dial internationally for free or what

WILL SOMEONE GOOGLE THAT FOR ME LOL

or really I was just looking for someone that has experience with magicjack, or a similar service/tool

is there any way I can use my own phone line or cell phone to channel through the internet to call the UK, Canada and Sweden - and not at an insanely high cost (if any additional cost at all)

maybe I'll just get an international calling card

fucking telephone lines, how do they work?

pick up phone

push numbers

wait for answer

talk

protips: use both hands, don't eat or drink during the processes.

that should be pretty efficient

I'm afraid if I pick up the phone and dial numbers, EVENTUALLY I'm gonna get charged like 3 dollars a minute through my current plan

I'm sure you knew that though *rolleyes*

seee skype is not cool cause you have to be on your computer

I'm kinda tryin to avoid being on the computer, if possible

I guess I don't mind talking through my computer if it goes to their phone, but as far as I know two of the people I want to call don't have webcams, so skype is out

will google voice go to someone's phone, by chance?

like, me on computer, them on phone?

that would be semi-ideal I guess

You can use Skype to call cellphones internationally, but you would be at your computer, and you need a subscription. Alternatively you can get a Skype to-go number and call it to call internationally with your cell phone.

If that makes sense

trying to think how they can do it...

maybe if they set up a google voice number that is local to you and have it redirect to their phone when you call the number then you can circumvent charges

It depends on the country you're calling. You have to buy subscriptions for each calling destination. For the US it was 6.99 for unlimited minutes.

Alternatively, you can just look at their rates and buy Skype credit, and then pay per minute.

For the person in Sweden, get them to call you from a cell phone. Preferably from a Tele2 Comviq Amigos plan. It will cost them less to call you in the states than it will for them to call someone in sweden with a different cell carrier. Don't ask me why, but thats how I called home for two and a half years.

ok, so a brief look up shows people doing something like this:

get a google voice number

get a http://www.localphone.com/ number

have cell phone

have google voice -> localphone -> cell phone

and its supposedly super cheap
that's all based on other people's opinion though as i've never gone through that much to get it to work

- trying not to be on the computer to make an international phone call
- not paying $5/minute because you refused to use Skype

Eh, calling the US is only the one that is that good. Other civilized countries seem to range around 16-20 cents per minute to call mobile phones.

Hey BB, you can do what I'm doing. Buy a calling card. They are pretty cheap and you can use them anywhere in the US with a cell phone. You can buy calling cards to call specifically to certain countries. You will get the most minutes per dollar.

For when she/he is at the computer, you can use Skype, MSN (with video), AIM, whatever.

my girlfriend's been in guatemala for the past 2 months and I've been using http://www.rebtel.com

ends up being 9 cents a minute for GUA. you put in whatever number you want and it gives you a local number to call like a 919 number. then you can just call it whenever you want from your phone. easy stuff and the cheapest i've been able to find.

^^ Well, I can only speak for the country I am calling to. But I paid 13.85 dollars and got 500 minutes. I bought the card on sale. So that's $0.0277 a minute. Unless you're buying one with like 1000 minutes or more, the card is only valid for 6 months. This isn't a problem for me, as I only have some 70 minutes left on it and I bought it at the beginning of the month.

But, it's still a HELL of a lot cheaper than the overage charge Sprint charges for when you go over your anytime minutes (like $.50 a minute!)
