New Michael Cera movie, but it looks better than his usual stuff. Same sort of pseudo-indie theme, though... this one even moreso, since it's based on an indie-music-obsessed comic book.
Mission Valley is having an advance screening for it at 7PM on Wed, July 28. We've got about 15 or so completely free tickets left (Admit 2 per ticket) for it here at the Talley Student Center info desk, if anyone really cares to see it early.
Personally, I'm not sure what to think of this movie. On the one hand, I don't really care about it at all, having never read the comic book. On the other hand, it looks like it could be pretty good or at least amusing. On the third hand, it looks like it might end up being a complete mess.

He'd be a bit better if he ever played something besides an awkward high school kid.
(...or maybe not. For all I know, that's the only role the guy can play half-decently.)

Wish I was still in Raleigh to catch the preview.
I've read the first 2 Scott Pilgrim books. Pretty funny stuff, lots of videogame references.
I'm okay with Cera always playing the same character. This time, instead of an awkward high school kid he's an awkward college grad that somehow is a hit with the ladies. Also he can fight.
The real draw to this movie is Edgar Wright and his enthusiasm for it. They're really treating the source material well and I expect big things from the director of Shaun of the Dead (and Hot Fuzz and Spaced). 7/22/2010 5:12:06 PM |

OH FUCK IT ALL, I won't be in Raleigh and can't see the advanced free screening or whatever.
I have all six of the comics (last one came out on the 20th) that the movie is based on. It's pretty entertaining as far as psuedo-indie American comics goes.
The movie could flop or be great. I subtract points for Michael Cera, but award them back for Edgar Wright.
They're doing an interesting take with actually incorporating more video game elements into what is already a very heavily video game centered series (they're doing a lot of video-game audio and music, which makes sense but might be overkill).
I'm generally excited about this though, bad or not. 7/22/2010 11:03:57 PM |

I'm pleasantly surprised that this is at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I never doubted that I personally would enjoy it, I was just expecting it to get snubbed by the critics.

Perfect.
It nails the "comic book movie" feel better than any other.
It's a better video game movie than any other (depsite not being a video game. well, not at first).
It's a great comedy for nerds and non-nerds alike. Everyone in the theater laughed a lot.
If you're tired of Michael Cera playing the same character, this one is... very different. And similar. At the same time.

The beginning is panel for panel almost. They fit a lot of the comic in the time, very well done and true to the source material. 8/14/2010 9:36:31 PM |

Absolutely enjoyed it. Had me chuckling and smiling the whole time.
It caters to a niche of people, and others may not be able to handle it. It's one thing if you don't catch some of the pop-culture references, it's another thing if the visual style makes you feel like you might have a seizure. It was definitely right up my alley though. 8/14/2010 9:55:04 PM |

the movie is pretty much exactly the same up until the clash at demonhead concert (ending of book three.) after that, there is some plot divergence but the movie still covers the full arc of the comics. the books obviously go far more into character motivations/backstories and knives and kim get a lot more screen(page)time8/15/2010 11:25:00 PM |

Michael Cera plays an awkward young man trying to score w/ a girl. Ex's on both sides get in the way. Michael finds self-confidence. Also, there's a band, concerts, and gushing over the former.
If I didn't know this was a comic book, I'd say they took Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist and added a bunch of video-game references. Still, I enjoyed this movie immensely. 8/16/2010 9:21:40 AM |

Holy cow, I just realized that Roxy Richter is played by Mae Whitman.
aka Ann Veal from Arrested Development.
which makes it even funnier when Scott Pilgrim is having trouble figuring out who Evil Ex #4 is.
