I want a bicycle in almost new condition (no rust or damage). Anyone got anything <$75? I just want it for riding around the neighborhood for exercise and to get to the pool/gym.

I will check the FS threads too but just wanted to get this out there.

If we get to an agreement it is going to be pending a visual inspection and possible test ride, haha.

Less that $75, no. My bicycle mechanic has some quality older bikes he's completely gone through and is looking to sell. I need to get a list and post it.

I do realize that $75 is cheap. However I can get a new cruiser by Schwinn from target for like 120. So I am seeing if there is anything else out there. If not, I will be hitting up the retail market.

Yeah, and that Schwinn is a complete POS. For the same money you can get a much nicer used bike, which is about what James has I think.

big surprise, God has an opinion about bicycles and how inferior everything is unless it cost $texas

LRlilDaddy, how far is your gym/pool? is all of your riding going to be on roads, or will you be taking trails any part of the way?

as much as i hate agreeing with lewoods (seriously, it hurts), i'd recommend looking at a decent used bike over a new one from target or wally world...i picked up a practically new GT avalanche 3.0 (disc edition) of CL for $100 a while back and it's certainly nice enough to ride around town, though i'm quite sure snobs like God would rather be raped by a randy rhino than deign to sit on such a machine

not really sure what that is...but then again, it's worked so well for years that i simply haven't had any reason to become a bike mechanic...maybe i'll learn if it breaks sometime...in the meantime, i think i'll continue using my awesome $100 bike without any trouble

if that's okay with you, i mean? trust me, i would rather be raped by a randy rhino than deign to ride with you

You can find a bunch of idiots on cl that will sell a decent bike from that price.

Lewoods is a fucking idiot. He's not entering a fucking mountain bike race, he wants to go to the fuck pool and the gym. Who fuck would want to pay 300+ for a bike that might get stolen in 3 months.

Dumbass, I did not say $300 and it sure as fuck won't get stolen in a couple months if you buy a half decent lock.

Get an on guard U lock instead of a shitty one and a new bike when the shitty one fails.

I think people underestimate how much new bicycles cost.

First off, $300 is cheap. $300 will barely get you an entry level road/mountain bike that isn't some shitty piece of crap. "Decent" bikes range from $500-$1000.

And do not buy something at Wal-Mart or Target. Would you buy a car at Wal-Mart or Target? The prices are so cheap because they're assembled in some third world country and have the shittiest tires, the shittiest gears, and the shittiest brakes.

Bikes, unlike cars, are investments. A good bicycle can last you literally the rest of your life. It's completely worth it to spend a good amount of money on one.

And yes, if you get a U-Lock and properly lock up your bicycle, it won't be stolen.

If you're lucky, you can find a used road bicycle on Craigslist that fits your size. Find out what size frame you need and look for something.

And cruisers/hybrids are retarded. Don't buy one.

Where did he say he wanted something nicer than the $120 Schwinn? Take another leap on your Jump to Conclusions mat plz.

It's the Italian word for group as in "component group". You know we use a lot of Italian on TWW, so I don't know why you didn't think of this.

A component group refers to a specific set of components designed to be on par with one another. For example, Shimano's "LX" line would would be considered a group. A bike with a Shimano LX group would have LX shifters, LX levers, LX derailleurs, LX cranks, LX pedals, LX bottom bracket, and possibly other parts. A bike such as yours has an amalgamation of many different parts from many different vendors and groups. So, even when God tries to be condescending he still finds a way to fuck it up.

I'm a total bike snob myself, but I can't hate on someone wanting to buy something cheap to ride around the neighborhood.

Oh Geez!

Yeah God is pretty much a label whore when it comes to bikes. Probably because he thinks that buying that new gadget or reading that new cycling magazine will make him a better rider. But I think most of the real riders on the cycling thread have learned to ignore half of what he says because it's obvious he speaks on topics where he is completely out of his element.

lewoods is the most daft poster in this thread, probably all of the garage as well. I would not take her advice under any circumstances.

Do some searching on the C-List you can find the right tool for the job there. Post what you find in the cycling thread and get some honest opinions in there.

^^bull crap, dude. I just happen to know the difference between shimano 105 and the worst derailleurs ever designed. Label/frame manufacturer doesn't make a difference except for price.

I couldnt agree more with these anti-God posts. It is too funny, almost like he/she didnt even read the OP.

God, we get it... you think you know a lot about bikes. As I said before though it's just for riding around, not entering any competitions or anything. However, when I am ready for that tour or circuit or whatever you bike snobs call competitions, I will hit you up and find out what the best Trek or Parlee that just came out is.

I'm still looking for a bike that doesn't need any work and I can ride around. Thanks everyone.

I don't think "just for riding around" means what you think it means.

This is the same reason people buy those heavy hybrid pieces of shit.

"Oh, I'm just riding around!"

"Oh, it can do everything because it's a hybrid, right!"

See, either two things are going to happen:

1. You ride around for awhile, you get bored of biking after awhile, and you sell your bike. In this scenario, you will be fine to buy whatever piece of shit you want.

2. You ride around for awhile, and you really start to enjoy it. Eventually you want to go faster. In this scenario, you have a horrible piece of shit and you have to sell it and buy an actual road bike.

See, in both scenarios you are going to end up selling it. You might as well buy a road bike.

Doesn't exist at that price. That's like asking "All I want is a car for $500 that doesn't have any maintenance issues."

If this person doesn't know anything about bikes, how do you figure they'll be able to take care of it?

Seriously, STFU already!

You have no place in this thread or in the cycling thread for that matter when it comes to giving advice on purchasing a bike.

Quote :
"I don't think "just for riding around" means what you think it means."

A bit odd how you try to manage his expectations when you haven't even asked him one single question pertinent to his riding preference. You automatically went with "hey, get the fast shit, it's what you want."

riding posture, speed, comfort....none of these issues you addressed or cared to because you have your head so far up your ass all you're eating is chamois butt'r creme. (For those who don't have such an omniscient bike background like God it's a skin lubricant you can smear on your ass for long rides)

LRlilDaddy I wouldn't take advice from a below average weekend warrior who can't even walk his little baby nuts around the block without getting injured. He also has no interest in helping you find a ride you would be happy with.

So I reiterate, STFU and let me people enjoy their rides. Chime in when you've learned to read/listen or stopped being an all together toolbag.

God,

many of us ride bikes as a form of transportation and have no interest in "going faster"

Oh nos! I just bought one of the inferior hybrid bikes because I wanted a bike that could be used for pavement and path riding. Well atleast I thought that's what I wanted a bike for...

I failed to let God tell me what I really wanted. Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with this shitty hybrid that doesn't go SUPER FAST.

I have found this to be such a problem that I had to stop riding bikes cold turkey. Every time I even see a bike I just have this unquenchable thirst for speed. I have to often ask myself, "why can I not just use a bike to get from point A to point B instead of turning into the 2-wheeled incredible hulk?"

youre right i should have been more clear. but no bike is gonna hold up if you bash it into curbs and throw it around like a rag doll.

craigslist, craigslist, craigslist.

That's the best place to look for a bike. People are starting to ditch their trail bikes and are loading down the market with them. $50 can get you a good used bike.

Just make sure the guy wasn't a weekend warrior mechanic who fucked his bike to misery.
