Life would seem easier without them.

You wouldn't be angry, happy, irrational, stupid. You wouldn't worried or feel self-conscious or doubt yourself.

This is almost as bad as a lafta thread.

Watch yourself, merbig. You're slipping into dangerous territory.

People place far too much value on them, involve them unnecessarily, and allow themselves to be ruled by their emotions.

And it's a language many people speak, but that I don't, but they seem to expect me to. Makes for some interesting and frustrating conversations

a pretty interesting description of Jean-Jacques Rousseau by David Hume:

Quote :
"He has only felt during the whole course of his life, and in this respect his sensibility rises to a pitch beyond what I have seen any example of; but it still gives him a more acute feeling of pain than of pleasure. He is like a man who was stripped not only of his clothes, but of his skin, and turned out in this situation to combat with the rude and boisterous elements."

as someone who hasn't cried but once in his adult life, I can tell you that on the one hand, I am better in a person to person disagreement, cause I don't lose my cool unless I am touched...on the other hand, it is damned hard to convince someone that you are empathetic to their situation when you clearly are not capable of that emotion. My bottom line is that I built my life around my lack of IRL outward emotion, I manage a store, I am the frontman of two bands, and in general tell almost everyone around me what to do - not because I get off on it, but because my lack of emotion allows me to make quick, logical decisions and then equally as quickly tell others how they will contribute to the goal at hand without coming off as anything other than coolly professional and respectful.

I'm pretty much the most unaffected person in the world emotionally. It sort of sucks and doesn't make relationships easy...
