so I'm moving to NC and I want to buy a car from a friend
has anyone done this?
what kind of paperwork do I need to do? I assume I will need a NC license and proof of insurance
what kind of taxes or fees are involved in title transfers? 7/27/2010 1:11:14 PM |

I know that I gave my old car to my husband back when we were dating. We pretty much just went to the DMV to sign some papers to turn the car over. I think that he had to pay the taxes on the car and the taxes depend on the car. 7/27/2010 1:12:26 PM |

I think this will work out - but its going to be some crazy paperwork

Don't buy it. It it breaks down he will never hear the end of it. If he's smart he will sell the car to someone he won't ever want to see again.
This maybe the case with you though 7/27/2010 1:38:53 PM |

^^ if you knew how cheap it was being offered to me you might consider buying it whatever the problems - he got this car from a friend who was helping him out now he's moving cross country for a good job and he wants to help someone else out
^ yeah I'm definitely showing up late to "real life" as it is experienced by most Americans I'll be okay I spent 8 consecutive years in college and I haven't owned a car for the past 2 years but I'm not an idiot so I'll handle myself 7/27/2010 1:47:16 PM |

the DMV link provided by God says:
$68 in fees and a 3% highway use tax based on the value of the vehicle 7/27/2010 1:51:00 PM |

so here's a new question
if I go buy the car in another town (Gastonia) do I need to go with the owner to the DMV to drop off the license plate and get a temporary tag?
or can I pick up a temporary tag in Raleigh before I go?
it would be easier if I could go get the car on the weekend but if I have to go to the DMV with the current owner I'll have to go during business hours 8/11/2010 2:04:27 PM |

I have always been able to talk the owner into letting me drive it home with their plates on the condition that I will return the plates for them when I go into the DMV to transfer the title. Everyone I've bought a car from has let me do it. One guy asked me to fax him the receipt (they give you one when you turn in plates) so that he could get a partial refund on his property taxes.
Gastonia eh....It's not a stolen Honda is it?

nah its a POS Chevy
wish it was a Honda
although a STOLEN Honda would probably make the title change more difficult 8/11/2010 3:03:50 PM |

Only the engine, transmission, and half the other components on the car would be stolen. They'd pick up a shell with a good title to swap all their stolen goods into. 8/11/2010 3:27:11 PM |

No, but at the one in Cary they have an ATM machine that will gladly rape you on fees. 8/11/2010 5:41:26 PM |
