That dog's sense of smell would be a valuable tool for podiatrists. 8/5/2010 12:24:49 AM |

Most people that have diabetes don't realize they have it. It's not like one day you're good, and the next you're Wilford Brimley. 8/5/2010 12:33:12 AM |

Well I'm not arguing that. If you lose feeling and have an obvious infection in your extremities you should go see the doctor. A lot of diabetes patients don't see podiatrists soon enough, and end up getting amputations that could have been prevented. Close to 40% of all patients seen by podiatrists are diabetics fwiw. 8/5/2010 12:48:05 AM |

If you're a type 2 diabetic and you don't regularly check your feet you can ignore most symptoms that would usually be indicated by pain because you're losing sensation in your feet as a side effect from the disease. The guy was obviously in denial about being a diabetic and probably was 100% ignorant of the symptoms and conditions you're at risk for as a type 2 diabetic. He was probably ignoring his wife's feedback about his symptoms for years (they can present very slowly in type 2 diabetics).
