Don't know how many people have these, but I do, and according to NC after Nov 30, 2010 you can get a $100 ticket for having these. Something about covering up the "North Carolina".
Just an FYI for all of us out there with these

pretty sure that its been a law for quite sometime that it is "illegal" to have anything on the license plate
including the clear covers or the frames like you're talkin bout 8/6/2010 11:17:14 PM |

^ it became law last year and got a lot of media coverage around that time, but crazy_carl is right, the law says you can't get fined until November 30

Yeah. I got a seat belt ticket a few months ago and the cop told me I had to take my license plate frame off. It wasnt even obstructing the view of anything on the plate.

I use one of these, primarily to keep the license plate from turning weathered and yellow:
is that considered illegal too? It doesnt cover any logos or words on the plate 8/6/2010 11:59:31 PM |

im confused, you keep your car clean, your license plate is ON your car, why not keep it clean too? Not my fault NC plate's paint likes to turn yellow and crack 8/7/2010 1:25:46 AM |

So while I hope you recognize that I was primarily poking fun, I'll still answer: clean/dirty != aged/not
Do you not recognize the difference between the car that you've chosen to purchase, and the license plate that the state insists that you attach?
Car you chose: sure, that reflects on you License plate mandated by the state: not nearly so much...especially seeing as how everybody is offered the same boat ride 8/7/2010 1:31:32 AM |

I can understand your point if you do not take into consideration the weathering effects on a license plate. If everyone had a fresh 2-month old plate then we'd all be equal, but some of us have old plates
Just because it is mandated and issues by the state doesnt mean you shouldnt take care of it, its on your car after all 8/7/2010 1:37:57 AM |

so whats the consensus here? is the frame only illegal if it obscures the "North Carolina" or the month/year stickers to the point that they can't be read? I have a thin frame that LEOs haven't mentioned anything about...
and if you want to clean your plate, never use lacquer thinner; it will remove the blue paint from the letters/numbers 8/7/2010 7:53:33 PM |

This thread is full of ridiculous-ness from top to bottom, but the worst is that this is actually a fucking fineable offense.
Some of this has merit, but most of it is fucking retarded. Does our state have nothing else to worry about?

Some idiot on I-85 yesterday had one of these frames on her car, but didn't bother putting in the bottom screws so it was just flapping around and had some sparkly glitter shit on it so it basically blinded you as you drove behind her She deserves the $100 fine imo for making the rest of the highway like Ray Charles. 8/9/2010 12:52:42 PM |

off topic but somewhat related - if I just moved out of NC, am I required to return my NC plate somewhere? Or can I just keep it? 8/9/2010 1:07:19 PM |

South Carolina had this same law and the South Carolina Police Foundation (or whatever, one of those police groups that ask for money all the time) was selling placards. They had to send out a letter explaining that they were violating a law.
This was hilarious, but I guess they lobbied a few state congressmen and got the law thrown out and so they are back to selling the placards. 8/9/2010 1:39:21 PM |

i feel like there has already been a thread on this
and the general consensus was that it was just another reason for a cop to be able to pull you over and ask for license and registration and "check you out." I personally don't think that if it doesn't cover anything important, then it shouldn't be an issue, but some of the cops say if it partially covers the "North Carolina" or whatever state it is, that they can't figure out what state it is, so thus it is a hindrance. 8/10/2010 8:54:09 AM |
