So, when I return back to school in Spring '12, I'm thinking that I might go to Virgina Tech instead of NCSU. Right now, I'm doing CSC through Distance Ed.
I did like NCSU while I was there, but Virginia Tech might be a good change of scenery.
Thoughts? 8/9/2010 8:06:05 AM |

is it the "change" thats important or the "scenery" thats important.
You'll know when you get there, that the scenery is not an improvement, but obviously, it would be a change.
If you want both, try GT instead of VT...

What do you mean by change of scenery? Blacksburg VA sucks for a mountain any town. 8/9/2010 9:23:37 AM |

More emphasis on 'change' than 'scenery'
Also, I'm struggling to find a list of colleges that will offer instate tuition to vets, if anyone can help out, that'd be super. 8/9/2010 9:30:20 AM |

have fun w/ the average lows in the winter...oh and by the way...a lot of the campus is really open and up on high land which equals really freaking cold wind in the winter (via my cousin who just graduated from there)
if the only reason you want to go there is change of scenery then that's fine. an nc state education and a virginia tech education make no difference, both are good schools. i say go for whichever is cheaper for you.

blacksburg does have some scenery, the town is fun as hell, but the winters are brutal. I'm not a fan of UVa, but that's probably more for sports than anything else. If you go to Tech though, watch out for the crazy asians. 8/9/2010 10:25:19 AM |

Blacksburg is a college town and has everything to offer that this label implies

How are you defining a 'college town'? Just because a college exists in a city/town doesn't automatically give it that 'college town' seal of approval. When I think of that term, I think of an area that does its best to cater to the college community and capitalize on what it has to offer. Raleigh has been anything but this.
The Hillsboro Street Revitalization is the first thing I can remember the city doing that was directly beneficial to the college since I started in 2001.

I respect your position
in that sense you are right
i, however, do take things in the literal sense
but i would hardly consider raleigh a college town at all based on your suggestion
fair play
personally, if there is a college in it it is a college town, thats why we rank them from best to worst raleigh is one of the worst and I feel as if you are excusing it by excluding raleigh from the status of a college town

I'll be just a little more specific.
Chapel Hill is a college town.
Raleigh is a town with a college in it.
In Chapel Hill, Blacksburg, Clemson, University Park (Penn State), etc....the college dominates the town. When you think of the city, the University in the city is usually the first thing you think of.
When a normal person thinks of Chapel Hill and Blacksburg, they think of UNC and Virginia Tech. When a normal person thinks of Raleigh, they think of the state capital of North Carolina. 8/9/2010 1:01:50 PM |

I lived in Blacksburg for 2 years and now in Roanoke for a year while my wife got her Masters. We loved Blacksburg and only moved to Roanoke to be closer to work. Just a few comments from a local:
- The weather is really not much different from Raleigh. - It seems like there are more attractive girls at VT than NCSU. - There are only a few bars (5-6) but they are all pretty cool. - Tail gating is pretty impressive. - All of the basic restaurants and shopping are covered between Blacksburg and Christiansburg. - Theres not much reason to go to Roanoke unless you want to go to a trendy bar or restaurant or for some of the festivals held there (microbrew festival, wing festival, etc). It is only 45 minutes away if you do want to go. - Really no concerts, shows, art type things if thats your thing (its not mine). - A lot of good hiking in the area. - No Cookout
If I was in the position I am assuming you are in (single, over 21). I think I would attend VT over NCSU for scenery and social atmosphere. I can't comment about any prestige, cost, education quality as I didn't attend VT.

For the record, Durham is not a college town. It actually sucks to go out if you're traditional college age (the bars cater to the Duke staff, faculty and grad students). And people do not usually come to Durham for fun from out of town, unless you're talking about the Performing Arts Center. And that's fine by me. 8/13/2010 5:31:14 PM |
