My ex-gf is about to move, and isn't able to take her dog with her. She looked into every shelter and rescue in the area and found none that will take him. The SPCA apparently told her they would put him down the same day, but she felt she didn't have a choice and was going to do so . . . . I heard that and just couldn't let it happen to such a great dog.
He's currently at my house, but I can't keep him permanently. I'd like for him to go to a home with people who have more time and attention to spend on him. Either way, he will definitely NOT be put down (so don't rant at me please).
His name is Chino (I didn't name him). He is an almost full breed Siberian Husky with bright blue eyes. I don't believe he has breed papers, but I may be wrong. He's about 6 years old, and typical Huskies live to around 12, so he's middle aged and not a hyperactive pup. He's up to date on all his shots and checkups and has full vet records. Gets along wonderfully with both cats and other dogs. He's the most laid back and relaxed dog I've ever seen, and is happiest just relaxing at the foot of your chair and being pet. He's fine as both an indoor and outdoor dog or any mix of the two, but he seems to prefer being kept indoors, especially in the summer. He doesn't need a huge place, and has lived happily in a 1br apt granted he was taken out on occasion. He is of course house trained and has never in the time she's had him peed on or destroyed anything.
For those not familiar with Huskies, they're interesting and very easy to keep dogs. They're extremely clean (they groom themselves like cats!), very intelligent, don't smell (NO nasty dog odor, even when he's wet!), and don't bark except under the most extreme circumstances. Yes, that's right, he doesn't bark. The most noise I've ever heard him make is a little "woo woo" noise, kind of like a person talking. In the three years she's had him, my ex has only heard him bark a single time . . . . when there was a guy trying to break into her apartment.
At any rate, time is not particularly critical. Anybody interested is more than welcome to come see the dog, take him for a walk, etc. If you're apprehensive he can live with you for a little bit until you see how you like him (or how he gets along with other pets you may have) and if it doesn't work out I'll take him back and keep looking. However if you're anything like me, he's the kind of dog who will grow on you very quickly. He'd be a great first dog!

^ yeah exactly. your gf doesnt seem to be trying very hard. or hard at all. there are TONS of pet-friendly places that she can move, to. I love how people use the excuse "moving" or "baby on the way" so that they can dump their pet into the shelter. 8/10/2010 9:24:09 AM |

He looks mixed Siberian... I have a mixed Siberian as well and she is the BEST dog I have ever owned! If he's anything like my girl, I'm sure this dog would be a wonderful pet for anyone who wants and easy keeper with lots of love for you.

i'm not trying to be a jerk...just pointing out that you might want to consider taking him back and trying again, as huskies tend to be pretty easy to adopt out8/10/2010 3:02:16 PM |

Is he neutered? Is he crate trained? Does he have enough Husky in him to blow his coat? How does he do on walks? (Pulling, trying to chase things, etc) How much training has he had in the past? Has he ever been clicker trained? How much does he weigh? How does he do in the car? Has he ever been to the dog park and how does he do there if so?] 8/10/2010 4:05:08 PM |

Yes, he is neutered. He is not crate trained (just housetrained) but he's intelligent enough that training should be simple. He does blow his coat, but not quite as bad as most Huskies. Does GREAT on walks, doesn't pull or chase just casually trots besides you and sniffs around for good places to pee on, heh.
He's had some basic training, but not much. He'll sit and stay but it really depends on who's asking (he'll obey me, but not my ex for example, probably because was was pretty spoiled). Again, should be easy to fix with a bit of reinforcement. Not clicker trained. Weighs 80lbs. Does GREAT in the car, I've been taking him all over in my truck where he happily plops down behind the seats. He's equally happy on a leash in the bed, though he prefers inside the cab due to the heat, heh. My ex had a convertible and he happily sat in the back on even long 5+ hour road trips. Does GREAT at the dog park. 8/10/2010 6:30:15 PM |

How active is he once you do get out? Fetch etc? 8/10/2010 9:17:29 PM |
fregac All American 4731 Posts user info edit post |
Pretty active, he loves to run around and romp and play games, then come home and chill for the rest of the day, heh. Unlike most huskies doesn't have much problem with water (though he only stays in briefly usually, we take him to the lake with us). He especially loves romping around in snow on the rare occasions when we get it. 8/10/2010 11:18:17 PM |

Few questions -
What is he used to in terms of daytime - by this I mean, folks in and out or someone home all day or owner gone for a job who can come home @ lunch and give the dog a walk/some attention?
How friendly is he with guests? Also- how does he do with kids or does anybody know?
And just to double check, you said it'd be cool if someone sees whether he gets along with other animals in the house (or whether they get along with him) and if it doesnt work out?

He's used to his owner being gone most of the day at work (generally not even coming back for lunch). Even if he's home alone for 7-8 hours he doesn't really get into trouble, though he'll be really ready to go out for a walk by then. He has no problem with guests or children, he'll even tolerate little kids trying to ride him, heh.
And yes, its perfectly cool if you want to take him for a little bit and see how he works out with other pets. If you're not happy I'll take him back no prob. 8/11/2010 1:55:44 PM |

I would love a Husky but we have 3 cats...and while you say that Chino "gets along wonderfully with cats", Huskies do have a strong prey drive. One of our cats is scared of everything and will bolt at anything -- I'm betting that would trigger the prey drive in a heartbeat. 8/13/2010 5:21:55 PM |

A period of massive shedding where they lose their entire undercoat. Lasts a couple weeks. The undercoat comes out in clumps. If you brush them out often enough it's not that bad but you'll still want to vacuum daily when it's going on.
I'm interested in seeing if my Husky gets along with him.8/13/2010 7:37:37 PM |

Haha yeah. I bet he looks like he lost 15 lbs. Pascal looks super skinny now that he isn't fluffy anymore. I got that much hair out of Pascal with a normal brush in about the same amount of time. It's pretty crazy how much hair they have on them. 8/13/2010 8:15:54 PM |
