Since there seems to be a bunch of random apartment threads, let's gather information in one place.
I'm currently looking for an apartment in Raleigh near downtown or Cary in the Crossroads area. Other than staying away from Preiss Company properties, anyone have recommendations? 8/10/2010 7:43:00 PM |

I currently live at the Enclave at Crossroads and thoroughly enjoy it so far*
Our lease is up in October and I think I'm going to switch a one bedroom here
*I've been here 2 years

My friend lives at the Enclave, too, and loves it. She has a one bedroom.. It's a little under 700 sq ft I think?
My other friends lives across the street from there as well, at Legacy (I think that's what it's called). She loves it there. 8/10/2010 8:04:05 PM |

Has anyone lived in those apartments near Broughton and Cameron Village? I'm pretty sure they're just called The Raleigh Apartments. 8/11/2010 1:41:23 PM |

I stayed at Bennington Woods for 2 years (on cary parkway near the holly springs intersection)
Very close to Crossroads and out of the traffic. I haven't been there in a year so I don't know how rates are now but my first year was $690/month for a 2 br/1 bath. That included trash, water, sewer... Only thing I had to pay was electricity and of course cable/phone, etc.... My 2nd year they only went up to $710 and they were going to keep it that way for my 3rd year but my wife and I built a house. The management there is super nice if it is the same person (her name was Meghan).
I would live there again if I had to move back into an apartment. 8/12/2010 9:33:49 AM |

^^ I lived at the Raleigh Apartments for about ~1.5 years. It was below average, but not bad enough to move out of. Theres no central AC, there was a bit of a roach problem, and my neighbors complained I watched TV and/or walked around after 11pm.
All of the negatives really revolve around the fact that the apartments are really old and theyve done little to keep them nice. Electric bills were high, floors creaked, you heard everything, the door locks were awful, etc etc. Oh, the laundry room was gross as well. The W/Ds were from the 60s and there was always some insect infestation in there.
However, there are definitely some benefits. Rent is cheap -- I was paying like 560/month for a 1bedroom that was moderately huge. The family room was almost the size of two family rooms, good bathroom size, really big bedroom, central hallway. Theres a good mix of tenants, mostly students or young professionals. About 1/3 of the parking is off a side street, and I never had an issue finding a spot right outside my apartment. The neighborhood is really nice, nothing shady around Cameron Village, that HS back there, or the neighborhood across the street. The location with respect to NCSU, the highway (via Wade), and downtown were pretty clutch.
Overall, youre not paying much and youre getting a spacious place in a nice neighborhood with good neighborhoods. The bad is that the place is terribly in need of a renovation, has some serious bug problems, and you can pretty much hear people fart from 2 floors down. 8/15/2010 12:31:12 AM |

Don't move to Woodbridge Apartments. The apartments and management themselves are alright, but they have some loud, rude motherfuckers that live here. It's like the worst of college apartment living but 20 minutes away from any college. I don't get it.

Just moved into Windsor at Tryon Village. Very nice, good amenities, my 2 bedroom is freaking huge. A bit pricey compared to a lot of places, but it is brand new, great location (Crossroads area), mostly young professionals from what I've seen so far. 7/19/2011 6:56:15 PM |

Looking for a place for the Fall.
Curious if there's any first-hand experience / information on the cheap 1BR places around campus: Westgrove Towers, Parkwood Village, Mission Valley, Hunters Run, Arbor Creek, etc.

I just moved out of Arbor Creek at the beginning of June. It is the cheapest place I found for a 1br which was important since it was just me living there. As such, they do have some interesting characters that live there, but management changed over in the year I lived there and from what I can tell they are trying to fancy it up a bit. They're remodeling all of the buildings in due time and have just finished completing 2 entire buildings which sat abandoned for the first 9 months i lived there. It's also really convenient to Crossroads shopping, the beltline and 40, and is a straight shot down Western to campus. I'd say my drive to campus was never more than 10 mins.
I'm a fairly easygoing renter so I was generally satisfied living there because I kept to myself. However, I will say that maintenance is entirely too slow and you often have to make multiple requests and keep reminding them of your issue. I got to the point where I had to send a letter from an attorney so they would take me seriously. If you don't have any maintenance issues, it's a perfectly fine place to live. They tore up the pool that was at the complex but according to some fliers they sent out there's a new pool but it must be further into the neighborhood than where I lived because I never saw it.
Oh, and in case you didn't know, they don't have central heat or air, they have a wall unit akin to what you find in hotels. But that did really help on my electric bill because I would only turn it on for a few hours a day, because my 1st level apartment was really well insulated. Never had a bill over $40 the entire year.
And I'm sure that was entirely more than what you wanted to know haha! 7/20/2011 8:07:45 PM |

^^^I just signed a lease today at Poplar Place in carrboro. 2 bedroom 2 bath 1045 sq feet for 440 for my roommate and I. I recommend Autumn woods, Laurel Ridge, Chamber's ridge, Sunstone, Shadowood. These were pretty decent places I thought with Autumn woods and poplar being the most expensive. I was not familiar with chapel hill prior to my search this past month and came to the realization that its easily more expensive than raleigh which i'm sure you are aware of. 7/22/2011 2:58:58 AM |

I lived in Bennington Woods in 06-07; recommend it as well. Closer to most things than you think and close enough to the Lochmere neighborhood that it's pretty quiet almost all the time. 7/22/2011 10:05:16 AM |

^^Thanks but we ended up going with The Crest in Carrboro. Nice place, kid friendly, racquetball court, indoor pool, and the 2BR/2Bath ran us $560/month. Plus the school was really good and its on three bus lines, so I don't have to drive to work anymore. Moving in next weekend. 8/13/2011 10:39:03 AM |

^Wow, that sounds fantastic.
I'm currently in Booker Creek Townhouses in Chapel Hill. Don't ever rent here. We're paying $375/mo (each) for shitty A/C and heat, leaky faucets, drafty windows, and thin walls. It takes the office forever to fix stuff. 2BRs and 1.5BA. It was just cheaper than anything else in the area, and we're only 1/2 mile from work.
My girlfriend lives at the Sagebrook Apartments in Chapel Hill off Sage Rd., which I would highly recommend. She got one of their renovated units with more efficient A/C, more counter top space, and new appliances, I think it's about $900/mo. 8/15/2011 5:45:37 PM |
