I have a Sharp Aquos LC42D65UT that will not power on. The power light blinks, but nothing happens. From my research online, this is most likely a bad power supply board. Apparently it is a pretty common problem with flat screen TVs. Anyway, I was just curious as to how much this might cost to get fixed. Also, is this something I could fix fairly easily on my own?

My plasma had the same issue. Thankfully it was under warranty but I watched the repair man and it looked about as hard as replacing a desktop mother board. The back panel has a shit load of screws but once in, you just need to take out the bad board and replace it. If you can find a replacement part for a decent price I would say go for it.

Well I got this TV for free (since it was broken) so the warranty route will most likely not be an option.

Do I need a soldering iron, or is it a "plug and play" type of part?

most of the time if its the power board, its a capacitor or a set of transistors. if the screen is all white, its probably a fuse.

if the problem really is a capacitor or 3, you can fix it for under 10 bucks. (you will need a soldering iron... if youre still in town, you can borrow mine. i may also have caps or transistors if you need em)

i'd just pull the back off and examine the caps for swelling or gunk. also wouldnt hurt to have an EE type friend check the transistors etc out with a multimeter

i'm nowhere close to an expert, but i've brought plenty of LCD stuff with power issues at e-waste places and fixed it myself. if the problem is with the logic board, then i have no idea. with those, i just save the power supplies for parts.

also if its already broken, its not like you can hurt anything

I know a dude in Gboro that will come to your place and fix your TV for you (he's replaced the caps in my TV, as a matter of fact). Very professional, and he offers a 1 year warranty on all his labor. It will probably run you closer to $200 than $100 though. If jackleg can't end up doing it for you and you're interested, shoot me a PM.
