i can control my accent, i talk loosely when around other southern people, or non-southern people that have become friends

but if i talk to a non-southern stranger i enunciate like crazy

FTR, I have to "explain" my lack of NC accent with "my mom's from minnesota and my dad lost his accentliving in a former british colony, so there was never a southern accent at home to pick up"...so I did at least a passable job, on my own, with no outside assistance, formal program (do those even exist), or excessive practice.

^ My brother-in-law and his family are from Minnesota. They have far more noticeable accents than most people I hear here. They might as well be afraid of the dark Canadians.

Oh, to be sure. I never realized my mother's total lack of accent til I started encountering minnesotan tourists. But the people who ask me how I can be from NC but talk the way I do don't need to know how my mom's life story, and then mine, have influenced my speech. So I concocted a factually-based, but inaccurate and misleading , explanation.

(Right now, I'm living in Colorado on a seasonal job interacting with a customer base that's >90% tourists... they like to ask lots of questions of EVERYONE: whether those questions are personal, about the town, the park, the weather, or whathaveyou)
