what are some things that can be used for a reverse engineering exercise
(i.e. things to reverse engineer)

try to think of things that are inexpensive and dont need special parts

for most it is a Lounge thread, but i expect some creative ideas in CC, aside from the inevitable bullshit

I reverse engineered a gluestick once...

Also a stapler but that was harder.

If you want real easy maybe scissors.

a cheap film camera

TV (get them cheap/free online somewhere - they don't have to work)

for that matter, any type of appliance (radio, microwave)

old computers

define reverse engineer. just take it apart to see how it works? or are you going to have draw up and fabricate existing parts?

when i was a senior in ME i led a (taught?) seminar of incoming freshman where they had to disassemble a simple 2 stroke chainsaw engine and put it back together. they seemed to enjoy it. i think the engines were donated or something, i don't really know.

if you're going the fabrication route, i'd suggest something simple like a shaft with a sprocket and some bearings. (ie the drive shaft on your lawnmower)

this is just like a one-hour thing ... traditionally it's been a mechanical pencil, which i think is quite boring

we thought about a cheap analog watch, but we're not sure if they'll have the right tools (small enough) to mess around with the parts

in that case a (bait casting) fishing reel has a bajillion moving parts on the inside and is impossible to rebuild without some prior knowledge or a diagram. i found out the hard way. but it is pretty neat to see how the internals work.

a flashlight might be a good idea, actually. there's more there than it appears at first glance.

i would need about 10 of whatever we decide on

and don't think we want to spend more than 40 or so total

those are a staple and everything, but i enjoy the comics

of course we can blame the CO's photographers for lack of material
