"The welcome mat is out as North Carolina State University heralds in the fall semester and a new academic year on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

NC State received the largest number of freshman applications in its history – more than 19,000 – and expects a freshman class of 4,550, as well as 1,100 transfer students. The new arrivals will bring NC State’s student body to more than 33,000."

"When residents move in to residence halls this weekend (Aug. 13-15), they’ll discover a new sparkle to some familiar facilities. Several buildings were freshened up this summer, with new carpeting, flooring and furniture – including loftable beds – as well as LED lighting in bathrooms."

Talk about that.

I think this is a nationwide thing. Methodist University is overbooked by around 300 students. People are getting bumped to evening classes without their knowledge just to have enough room

....but I graduated so, pfft - don't care

this explains the unseen flow of confused freshmen around campus... especially the two girls walking in circles around fox labs looking for HA201!

I think this is happening across all the cash-strapped state schools.

So what you're saying is that the system is like selling 16,000 seats to an 8,000 seat stadium and denying people at the door?

I was surprised by how many people had applied to the graduate school this year. They told us this morning they had 14,000 applications this year.

Why does it surprise you in this 10.5% unemployed economy?

no, that's not what he is saying at all

12000 invitations

4500 RSVPed

why are you being so dumb right now?

Because what you're saying is not what the article is saying.

NC State received the largest number of freshman applications in its history – more than 19,000

An application is a piece of paper that someone takes time to fill out expressing the desire to go to the school. AKA RSVP REQUEST.

Nowhere does it say how many people were accepted or invited.

I guarantee you they accepted at minimum 4550. It is undetermined how many applications were accepted. It is undetermined how many people will not attend. Who knows the ratio of accepted applications versus attended applicants from last year? Not you.

you run a pizza shop

by all accounts a good one

but i am infinitely more qualified to speak on the subject of institutions of higher learning

NC State typically accepts around 60% of applicants

and you have to be trolling with this:

Quote :
"I guarantee you they accepted at minimum 4550."

really? do you guarantee that they accepted at least the number that enrolled? fucking genius.

Huh? Dude. You need to use the information provided in the article like me. I am using just the information provided in the OP's quotes. You can't be making numbers up (like 60%) off the top of your head.

If they accepted 12000 and all of them show up, they'd be fucked.

MANY APPLICANTS APPLY TO MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL AND DO NOT ATTEND EVEN IF THEY ARE
ACCEPTED

it is routine for schools to accept far more than they can accomodate because they can predict (using historical data) how many will accept

of course i wouldn't expect you to know anything about this process

the percentage of applicants accepted is reported by the university itself every year when it answers the US News questionnaire

of course you have never had a need for that resource

First link that came up in an ncsu.edu search for "Freshmen Profile"
http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/admissions/fresprof.htm

2007 data is the most recent, but the trends are consistent
Applied: 16,376
Admitted: 9,869 (60.3%)
Enrolled: 4,791 (48.5% of admitted)

USN&WR put our acceptance rate at 55% for this year.
Applied: 19,000
Admitted: ~10,450 (55%)
Enrolled: 4,550 (~43.5% of admitted)

Nah it's a good state for schools.

What would the 5th best be if not NC State?

I love when UNC students bring this up, because I'm much more comfortable being the 5th best school than they usually are about being the 4th best.

I love a growing freshman class.

Now I have more chances to fuck some freshmen instead of going to the bar and trying to slip someone a floorie.

^^ I don't get it.

I'd put Duke, Carolina, and maybe Wake over State. Even if we said Wake was #3 then who's 4 and 5? Davidson and Elon?

State is number 3 or 4.

The population is increasing in states that don't suck ass, leading to more people applying to colleges in the area around where they live.
In other news, grass is green.

I'd put Wake, Duke and Davidson above NCSU, but they're private and can be more selective. I know NCSU has some bullshit degrees, but that liberal arts stuff at UNC is more than bullshit.
