Quote : | "Man battered ex-wife over Facebook taunts
A man has been convicted of murdering his ex-wife after she taunted him on Facebook about paying child support.
Adam Mann used a hammer to batter Lisa Beverley, 30, before slashing her neck with a knife, the Old Bailey was told.
Jurors heard she had been online at her home in Plumstead, south London, on 15 September but the session came to an abrupt end at 2200 BST.
Mann, 29, of Springfield Road, Welling, Kent, was found guilty of murder and is due to be sentenced on 4 October.
Bitter dispute
During the trial the court was told Miss Beverley, of Coupland Place, had no chance of surviving after being hit on the face, head, neck and body.
Jeremy Donne QC, prosecuting, said Miss Beverley's five-year-old son was confronted with a scene of "unimaginable horror" when he found her the next day.
Mr Donne said the boy found his mother in a pool of her own blood on the floor of her living room. "She had been savagely beaten and stabbed to death," Mr Donne said.
The court heard the couple divorced in 2007 and were involved in a bitter dispute.
Miss Beverley was trying to get Mann to contribute towards raising their son, through the Child Support Agency (CSA).
She told the CSA he had lied about being unemployed and he had subsequently been sent a letter demanding payments of about £400.
The day before her death, Miss Beverley's Facebook profile was updated to say: "Now whose laughing? U've got done big time by the CS, so now leave us alone for good, your son hates u and so do I."
Hours before the victim's death, Mann telephoned the CSA saying he had no money and would not pay, said Mr Donne.
Jurors are still considering an allegation that Mann's new partner, Elizabeth Kilgallon, 27, perverted justice by giving him a false alibi." |

this is is just to show that the internet, really is, serious business
^ possibly, but who knows. there is no way to tell if she would be alive now if she hadn't said that his son hates him.

I feel like she would have said it at some point. Whether it be over the phone or in person. At that point, he probably would have beat her to death with a hammer and slit her throat. Reading this story, it just seems inevitable.8/19/2010 1:33:14 PM |

only when you cross the line between internet and reality. If two people know each other IRL, then the shit they say on the Internet is real. Otherwise, it's all LoLs

I really don't understand this mentality. She's basically saying we hate you and want nothing to do with you, but we love your money so keep it coming.
IMO if you really don't want someone in your life you have to sever all ties, including the ones that are beneficial to yourself, regardless of whether the law is on your side.8/19/2010 4:01:08 PM |

^^ agreed. GenuineSexyBoy is mistaken. shit can get real.
just becasue smart college boys make clever insults, doesnt mean there isn't a psychopath off his meds hammering nails into a baseball bat somewhere on the other end.
^ i'm afraid you don't understand how the mandatory child support system works. but yeah, i'm gonna go ahead and say that she wasn't terribly bright.

no, i didnt' get that impression from your post at all.
you said that if i dont know you, any insult you throw at me is all for the lulz.
i disagree: there are certain topics that someone could broach to me in the wrong way online, that could make me decide to go look that person up and go knock on their door.
granted, that hasn't happened yet, but i'm fairly stable and thick skinned. there are others out there who are not so much. 8/19/2010 4:10:31 PM |

No, I don't. Since this was in England I don't know if it even applies here.
All I'm saying is that if you have ended a relationship with a shithead maybe the best thing you can do is truly sever all ties with him. If he wants visitation and custody it's a different ballgame, but not having a shithead fucking up your life might be well worth the $10,000 a year or whatever some people are receiving in child support. "You can't have your cake and eat it too" and all that.
Rubbing his nose in it after the court rules in your favor is childish and immature. She definitely didn't deserve what happened to her, but I have a feeling she wasn't exactly the best person to have as a baby momma either.

Knocking on the door crosses the line between internet and reality. Contacting people they know IRL is also crossing the line. Posting personal IRL information is crossing the line.8/19/2010 6:36:32 PM |

umm, what kind of topics?
and no, you are not stable or thick skinned, if you would actually look someone up and drive up to their place and knock on their door. then what? are you ready to face the possible consequences? they might throw a punch. or they might taunt you further and enrage you enough to make you throw a punch. want to end up in jail, over internet comments?8/19/2010 7:49:01 PM |

I don't think this story has much to with the internet or Facebook. She coulda said that stuff in person to his face and probably got the same reaction--although seeing it up there all public probably stung even more. It has more to do with words and how much they actually hurt.
We've all been raised with this notion of non-violence and "stick and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me" thing. Obviously, the outcome this can have on kids who are expected to brush off verbal abuse is awful. But there's another consequence on the other end of things: people grow up saying whatever the fuck they want, and they never get their faces kicked in.
You cannot back someone into a helpless corner and then taunt them like a dog chained to a tree...that dog's eventually gonna bite. It's like when you're at the bar, and State has lost it's billionth game in a row, and you know deep down that we suck, and then some drunken Walmart/Chapel Hill fan gets up in your grill, all, "It's alright, dude. Just don't give up. Don't ever give up. AHAHAHA." That guy may not know it but he has just escalated the situation beyond words...he didn't actually throw the first punch, but he might as well have.

if someone were to make what i believed to be a credible threat to my family, or slandered me in some way that damaged my professional career....
I would look you up.
there's a lot of assgrabbing shenanigans on the interwebs, sure. but you people who think that you can do and say anything you want with impunity, well, you're wrong.
theres a fair number of folks in the world who are dead, maimed, raped, otherwise traumatized and/or in prison right now as a result of some internet drama gone wrong. you should understand this fact.8/20/2010 1:09:48 AM |
