Alright, i'm going to try to describe this as best as I can. this is a 2005 Jetta TDI 5 speed w/about 75k miles.

Basically what happens is that the clutch gets stuck in the depressed position, and the shifter will not budge out of gear. Yesterday it was in reverse, and completely stuck. letting go of the clutch left the pedal depressed almost all the way down, but it was enough to stall the engine.

Once it was stalled, I was able to force the shifter into neutral, and then i put my foot behind the clutch and pried it back out. It made a noise that reminded me of a breaking spring. However after that, I was able to crank the vehicle back up and drive it normally.

This is the second time that this has happened. Last time was 3 months ago, and it's been fine until yesterday. I imagine it will randomly happen again sometime.

Any idea what might be wrong? If it take it to a shop, will this be something that might have obvious causes or is this the type of problem someone would have to actually see to resolve?

oh yeah, where is your shop?

I haven't really had any mechanical problems with it before, so i don't have a shop I take it to.
