I just plug my nose with tissue
you have to change it every thirty minutes and if you do it overnight you wake up with a nasty case of dry mouth
if one falls out you just roll around in it all night til you wake up and you may wake up with a whistle 8/18/2010 2:45:42 PM |

mucinex dm if you have chest congestion as well. I think Kmart carries a generic. It will clear up both the chest and head. It is a bit more pricey than other meds, but it is the only OTC that has Guaifenesin, which acts as an expectorant (clears chest mucus). In my experience it has been the most effective at clearing up congestion in the head and chest 8/18/2010 2:52:49 PM |

for some reason the alka seltzer cold stuff always works well for me. its not the kind you put in a drink (although you can get that too but that shit is g-ross).
but its full of ingredients that others have already suggested.
i feel like i've never had success with mucinex. and it hurts my tummy for some reason :/ 8/18/2010 3:39:53 PM |

Mucinex decongestant is great during the day. It doesn't make me drowsy.
Alka seltzer works wonders too. So does the flu tea stuff.
Also for at night I highly recommend breathe right strips. They're awesome and definitely help me to breathe better. 8/18/2010 6:57:06 PM |

Sometimes, yes; but without the godawful noises.
I have pretty bad sinuses though. Like "surgery every handful of years" bad.

Typically, I avoid Afrin like the plague because I hate rebound congestion. In my younger days, I fell into the nose spray trap. But this afternoon, I used some because I was just miserable and wanted to get some sleep.

Nasal lavage. 1 cup warm water, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda Mix it up in a neti pot or in a "sports top" water bottle. Tilt your head to the side and gently flush the water through each nostril twice. 8/19/2010 1:14:54 AM |

Afrin is the cure all. It will open you up really fast. You can only use it twice a day every 12 hours for 3 days. After that it can plug you up again. Once I catch a cold and it is bad enough that I need afrin then I usually only use it at night for about 3 days and then it is over. 8/19/2010 2:44:13 AM |

i hear ya. i'm the same way. when i broke my nose when i was 12, they discovered my sinuses and air pathways are a lot smaller than what they should be. made a lot of sense as to why my face turns beat red when i run - ha i don't breathe!
breaking my nose at 19 didn't help the situation at all.8/19/2010 8:22:23 AM |

I took myself to the doctor today. I have oral antibiotics, antibiotic eye drops, and sleepy time cough medicine. I was also told to take Mucinex. So, I'm going to reassert my Mucinex-D recommendation. 8/19/2010 7:20:58 PM |

Biofreak70 recommended mucinex-d to me once a few years ago, and I have never looked back. It brings out the phlegm like no other Seriously though- I have tried everything you can get without a prescription, and that stuff is the only one that consistently works for me.
Sometimes an extra 30mg pill or two of pseudoephed with it have been necessary, but thats only when it's REALLY bad, and I have nothing of value to do (as that added to the pseudophed in the mucinex-d puts me into tard mode.) 8/20/2010 9:11:46 AM |

For something daily and consistent that doesn't make you feel bad, I like nasonex. After I use it, it clears your head up fairly well. After a week of using it I almost never have problems breathing.
Not so good if you're actually sick though. 8/20/2010 10:11:00 PM |

Well things like Nasonex and Flonase etc. are all Rx and not OTC. 8/20/2010 10:14:12 PM |

Yeah, but a doctor will prescribe it to you pretty easily, and if you have insurance it shouldn't be an issue.
The afrin nasal sprays work, but fuck they burn at first when you use them.
It actually put me in pretty terrible pain for about two minutes, then it worked great. I threw it away immediately after getting the pain and will never use it again. 8/20/2010 10:18:33 PM |
bottombaby IRL 21954 Posts user info edit post |
True. Things like Afrin also have horrible rebound congestion. If you have an allergic process that is contributing to your congestion and sinus issues, it's best to get an Rx nose spray and some type of allergy med. 8/20/2010 10:36:03 PM |
