had a bio lab professor that was a young PhD tell the class on the first day that he considered cheaters as skewing grading to take undermine the actual hard work of others, which leads to them getting less career wise in life than they would have earned without cheaters. He said that it was like inhibiting his hard fought for ability to provide for his children and family, like stealing off of his dinner plate. obviously, he vowed to prosecute cheaters to the full letter of the code. really made me think twice about cheating in college.

however, there are situations where you're almost in a huge disadvantage not to cheat because 90% of your classmates are cheating. look no further than any objectively graded online class ever for the most part.

on a side note - one girl in my grad program plagiarized herself by including a few paragraphs that she wrote in a 25+ page paper or so on another two 25+ page papers in other courses the same semester. one teacher was returning her test to her mailbox and saw that the other two teachers had also returned her papers - saw that the subject matter was similar so he read all three and found it. she was given straight F's and expelled from the program.

she was one of the biggest bitches I've ever met though, so fuck her.

the most fucked up part about it is that in our degree program we were supposed to develop a specialization, so we were encouraged to write on similar topics. If she had cited herself I imagine she would have been fine. It does say in the handbook that you can't plagiarize yourself, so it wasn't just pulled out of thin air to screw her but I think they went wayyy too far.

I had two classes that gave me a paper on basically the same subject. I simply asked each professor if it would be ok to use the same one for both classes and they said they didn't care so yeah two for one!

^^yeah that's the protocol, cool they let you do it. I've had professors not let me use anything on two papers, not even an intro that was like perfectly wording imo

^I agree

People "plagiarize themselves" in journal publications all the time. Generally they'll cite those previous works though, so it's not like the editors don't know what they're getting.

I did not cheat in college. I did, however, enable many other people to cheat by writing papers for them in exchange for money. (This doesn't really qualify as "cheating at NCSU," I guess, because I made it a point to never write for people at this school for both practical and ethical reasons, and also because a lot of it took place when I wasn't a student)

I have paid rent this way before and am frequently tempted to do it again, but my network of contacts has collapsed DUE TO AGE.
