I've had good success with leaving my dogs around the general area. The first time they nailed his ass pretty quick and shook him up pretty good before I could get him. The second time they dug up like 30 square feet of grass off near the woods before they got to him.

The hosepipe (oh yeah I went there) idea sounds pretty cool.
