I'm thinking of going to Atlantic Beach. Waves are going to be massive, with the hurricane being a couple hundred miles offshore but possibly not making landfall.

I've never seen decent surf from Emerald Isle to Atlantic Beach. I think it has something to do with the East->West orientation and Cape Lookout blocking some of the swells. The beaches further south from N. Topsail down to Kure run more of a Southwest to Northeast line. Check a map of NC and you'll see what I mean.

I heard Wrightsville had a nearly constant stream of clean shoulder high waves yesterday and they're expecting head high to double overhead later this week from the hurricane. I might run down there Friday night and spend the day there Saturday before starting the Labor Day festivities. I'll probably be too late though.

Wrightsville has spoiled me for sure. Loved going out there in the morning and catching the slow rollers a few years ago.

Really don't want to drag my board down the emerald for nothing but chop.

If there is a storm and you're going to be there anyway you might as well take it. As many surf shops as there are on that island somebody has to be catching some waves, right?

We had maybe chest-high swells around 8am near Oregon Inlet. Pretty clean overall but there was no one out.

I will be in Emerald Isle next weekend for a wedding. And thank god my friend has a house there he is letting us use, because fuck staying in a hotel in Atlantic Beach

down at Ocean Isle this past weekend the waves were so strong so maybe they are good that way.
