Chuck Klosterman makes this point, though he certainly didn't originate it.

it can be easier to score (as in turn into dating partner, not just a slam-dunk bang) a chick with a boyfriend than a single broad.

for a chick with a boyfriend you're only competing with one other guy, the boyfriend is going to be the primary bar you're measured against. identify his weaknesses and then present them as your strengths.

for the single broad you're competing against every other guy in the world she imagines exists, meaning you're going to be compared to some bullshit concoction she's amalgamated from books, movies and whatever methods her father neglected her. also, there's the thousands of actual guys who are indisputably way "cooler" than you.

so if you're lame, and thus insecure, and thus eager for a "relationship," a girl with a boyfriend can be a much easier target. or just go after a girl significantly younger than you.

i like the ring i have now (NOT an engagement ring, but i like it)

as much as i think engagement rings are pretty i'm not looking to be engaged AND anyways i think i might be most satisfied with just a thin, plain, platinum wedding band. simple. don't really think i'd need the engagement ring part of it.

well yea it would be because that $$$ can go to so much other stuff. i mean if you get engaged before you own a house or a car or whatever it just seems like kind of a waste.

clearly, i'm not on the marriage track right now so maybe my opinion would change if it was something i was seriously thinking about haha. but now i just am thinking: career and living life. NOT completing the typical steps everyone is SUPPOSED to complete
