Mac from 2007, OSx operating system.

new battery has been put in and after about 2 days it shows an X over the battery icon and wont run unless plugged into the wall..

wtf is up?

Maybe the mac is thinking the battery is dead or not there. Or it could be a straight up hardware issue. Take it to the mac store, they are pretty good about diagnostics there.

X means no battery / (very) dead battery, so either the battery circuits in the computer have gone bad, or you got a dud battery. Obvious test is to put your old battery back in and see if the computer recognizes it.

Apple Menu - > About This Mac -> more info -> power can also give you some details about what if anything the computer knows about the battery.
