^^ The D90 is the based on the mid-range frame that should be equipped with the screw motor as well as the silent wave (you'll see a "G" on lenses). The D40 only has the silent wave motor, eliminating all but the most expensive top-tier lenses. I would double check but the D90 should be compatible with every lens Nikon has made in the last 15 years or so

Yea, D90 should snap on almost anything.

Batteries, however, are not the case. D90 is based on the D80 style double-bump batteries, not the D40. You don't get ~4FPS at 12MP on that itty-bitty D40 juice. And if you're worth your salt you'll eBay an $80 handle and double up for more fun
