One of the benefits of working on a prescribed fire crew: experiencing this up close and personal. Although I'll admit, prescribed fires generally aren't supposed to burn hot enough to put on that much of a show.

...unless it's a site prep burn on a drum chop job. You're not doing a prescribed site prep burn correctly unless you end up fighting fire.

[Edited on September 16, 2010 at 12:45 AM. Reason : and it's a fire WHIRL. Although not as badass, no one in the fire service calls them tornados.]

Wildland firefighters generally know a lot about weather because wildfire behavior is heavily dependent on weather. We don't call them tornadoes because they are not tornadoes. They are dust devils/whirlwinds. Tornadoes form from thunderstorms, fire whirls form from the ground. There's a lot more to it than that, but that's the easiest explanation.

If a firefighter called it a fire tornado he'd be laughed at by other firefighters.

That article even contradicts itself:
Quote :
"Fire tornadoes occur when intense heat and turbulent wind conditions combine to form whirling eddies of air. These eddies can tighten into a tornado-like structure that sucks in burning debris and combustible gases"

If it's a tornado then it wouldn't be "tornado-like" would it?

Sorry to be nit picky
