obviously as a liberal atheist I am amoral: http://yourmorals.org/
Most of the surveys deal with 5 components of morality: Harm/Care, Fairness/Justice, Ingroup/Loyalty, Authority/Respect, and Purity/Sanctity. The first two are valued greatly across the political spectrum, more by liberals than by conservatives; liberals base their morality on only those two, while conservative morality is based on all five components (with fairness being slightly less valued than the others): http://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_haidt_on_the_moral_mind.html
When I took the Moral Foundations Questionnaire, I valued the Harm component just a little more than the conservatives and less than the liberals, while for the other ones I was considerably more extreme in valuing or devaluing than the liberals, including placing no value on the Purity/Sanctity component. 9/11/2010 5:28:50 PM |

I would describe myself as a moderate, pragmatic, right-leaning libertarian...but at least by the metrics in this study, my mind works more like that of a filthy leftist.

Duke's Score
My Score
^You can take comfort in not being as filthy leftist as me at least, although I still scored less on harm/fairness than the average liberal and on harm I scored less than the average conservative
Given those 5 parameters I guess I'm happy that I scored highest on fairness. 9/11/2010 8:18:04 PM |

I feel decidedly stupider after playing around with this site. The moral dilemmas in particular were tedious and absurd. My morality doesn't fit well in their boxes.

A more interesting comparison might be avg conservative vs avg liberal vs avg tdubber (so far):
avg conservative: harm 3.0, fairness 3.1, loyalty 3.1, authority 3.3, purity 2.9
avg liberal: harm 3.7, fairness 3.8, loyalty 2.1, authority 2.1, purity 1.3
avg tdubber: harm 3.2, fairness 3.7, loyalty 1.7, authority 1.5, purity 0.8
-
avg tdubber distance from avg conservative: harm 0.2, fairness 0.6, loyalty 1.4, authority 1.8, purity 2.1
avg tdubber distance from avg liberal: harm 0.5, fairness 0.1, loyalty 0.4, authority 0.6, purity 0.5
-
Tdubber totals:
Fairness - 33.3 Harm - 28.7 Loyalty - 14.9 Authority - 13.7 Purity - 6.9

(Trait - My Score (Lib - Con))
Harm - 2.3 (3.7-3.0) Fairness - 3.8 (3.8-3.1) Loyalty - 3.7 (2.1-3.1) Authority - 3.2 (2.1-3.3) Purity - 2.2 (1.1-2.9)
Looks to me that the harm itself is pointless, but I'm all about fairness/social justice. Apparently loyalty to group is extreme even by Republican standards, and I typically am a strong support of existing authority. I am middle-of-the-road on purity issues. Not sure what this makes me: an autocrat? Lawful Neutral?

This may be reading too much into it. But it looks like being high on fairness is common among liberals and libertarians, and that care about harm is what is differentiating the two. Harm perhaps taps into where one draws the line between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome.
Loyalty and authority seems to be something we all have a little of, but aren't defining characteristics for many tdubbers.

Yeah, that's why my scores are neither extremely low nor high in most categories.

For the aforementioned reason, you can't really make that sort of comparison. What's more important is how each of the categories rank relative to each other for the same person.9/13/2010 9:39:18 PM |

Seems accurate for me as I consider myself Libertarian on some issues and strongly Liberal on others.

I was pretty average.
The questions were terrible. Like "it is never acceptable to kill another human" Even if I don't support the death penalty there are times when taking a life is necessary, so I can't very well say I slightly disagree when I think there are very clear (although rare) times when someone needs to die.
Likewise if i'm crazy enough to think that it's never acceptable to kill another human then I don't see how I would put anything other than strongly agree. 8/16/2011 4:56:32 PM |
