Okay stupid question. Maybe I'm the only one who wants to do this. BUT. How can you remove items in the startup tab in system configuration? I deleted the key/file etc but it still gives me the option to check it. I want this gone.

-basically i removed the registry entries and files but the orphaned entries are still sitting there in the startup menu. Maybe i'm not looking in the right place. I'll do more research when I get home. Forums are blocked at work so i'm kind of going blind here. Anyone suggest another place in the registry to look for getting rid of these? Thanks!

Tried it. The entries in the startup never really go away. I've noticed on computers the old ones are always there even if you delete the keys and files associated with that. It's not really a big deal but I'd like to get rid of them especially if the issue has been resolved.

You tried both the registry cleaner part and the Tools > Startup part of CCleaner? I've never had something remain after I deleted it from the Tools > Startup section.

Long story short I had to clean a computer because a friend had intentionally disabled Microsoft Security Essentials because it was blocking an installer for a ripped game. That was a fun hour of booting into safe mode.

Even after cleaning the trojans FF and IE were still slightly screwed up. Had to fix proxies, and default searches.

If in Vista, download the stand-alone EXE and run it as an administrator.

Another idea is to download Autoruns (by itself or as part of the Sysinternals Suite) and use it to disable anything that loads at startup; watch out with this one, because I mean anything, even something necessary for the computer to work.
