So, my 84 ford 4 speed manual with the straight 6 is having probe. Still shifts well and drives well but I am experiencing rattling in the tranny especially at higher Rpms. I didn't think I was going to make it back from Jacksonville this weekend. It is not the clutch slipping as the Rpms do not rise. It didn't seem to want to go up hills and the rattling in the tranny got worse. So I pulled off at a rest stop, let her cool down and think about what I was going to do. Well I hopped back in and the truck got me home but felt week the whole way. I have only been driving it where speeds are below 45mph now. It still has get up and go and I a certain it was the tranny not th engine doing the rattling. The engine is running nice and strong. Anyone have any ideas? Good thing I did not try to tow my car with it! 9/22/2010 11:05:51 PM |

I changed the fluid with 80w90 or something generic gear oil when I first got it and I checked when this happened and it was still full. Should I try a different type of fluid 9/22/2010 11:08:53 PM |

what condition is the body overall on these trucks?
I have an 84 F350 i'm working on restoring, mechanically 100% but its rusted out.
Need long bed, cab, fenders... pretty much a whole truck
as to the OP... might try replacing a qt of the 80-90 with lucas stabilizer. I had an 83 bronco with the same driveline and symptoms that it helped greatly.
Otherwise... tear down the tranny and replace bearings as needed, or get a junkyard 5 speed from a later model and pick up some mileage. 9/28/2010 9:40:52 PM |

You'll have to come look at the body cabs and beds are decent and the fenders are spoken for 9/29/2010 10:16:23 AM |

hmm truck went and fixed itself for me.
why would you want to restore a f150 instead of just buying one in better shape. Well if you want a project I guess that would make sense.
I hear the later gen 5 speeds are weaker. mine seems fine now so I am not going to worry about it anymore
thanks,

Kyle...I think you're right; the 5-speeds are probably not as durable. Check your build tag on the door or door frame and see what your tranny code is. I think it's probably "B"...which is Ford's T170FT toploader 4-speed overdrive. I originally thought it was a Clark, but now I think otherwise.
Ford's 5-speeds in later trucks are actually Mazda...sourced from Aisin, I think. 9/29/2010 1:54:31 PM |

ill let you know what the build # is too. I'm remessing with the timing tonight. have had to run on 93. need to put the retard back into the truck a lil bit! hahaha

Trans b. Axle 18. Retimed it by ear. Running angry. New carb all dialed in I believe. 9/29/2010 6:54:43 PM |

I think it's a Clark! I've been looking into it and that is what I have been finding. Tranny is strong I tow a car with truck this Saturday. Let's see if she holds together 9/29/2010 7:07:08 PM |
