So the bathtub overflowed (I forgot to turn the water off... I'm an idiot sometimes) and we didn't notice until water started dripping in the room below it. We sopped up all of the water on the floor and the water that dripped from the ceiling...
I've never had this happen before... Do I need to call someone or will it dry out on its own? I have a ceiling fan going full blast to help dry the ceiling. 9/26/2010 6:48:07 PM |

There is probably water in the ceiling still.
Wherever it was soaking the ceiling either drill a hole or punch a screwdriver through, and see if you can get any more water to come down. You're going to have to paint it and fix it anyway, some extra holes wont hurt. 9/26/2010 7:18:31 PM |

If it was me, I'd probably rip out a good chunk of ceiling and have a look see at where the water might have got to.

^^ that part makes me ~
If it was me I'd nab a scrap of drywall and replace the whole area. A friend who's in construction or your local hardware store or even a rental place for hardwood installation tools will also have a wood moisture checker probe. Make sure your wood in the floor has dried fully or you'll open yourself up to mold, premature rotting, etc.
I don't think it's a horrible mistake, and you're probably out about $20 when it's all said and done.
Also, most tubs have an overflow drain in the bottom of the stopper thing (unless it's one with a plug). Make sure it's not stopped up to prevent future stuff.
Or purchase a timer

I've done this before. The garden tub takes forever to fill and I'll just get distracted with other tasks. 9/27/2010 12:43:34 PM |

^Funny...for the first time ever I saw a commercial for a water extraction company this morning and thought to myself...
"The guy who made that thread in Old School should probably hire a company like this. It might cost some monies, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and having mold problems in the future." 9/28/2010 12:04:42 PM |
